Intercontinental  & america GT Challenge

Intercontinental GT Challenge Powered by Pirelli represents the highest echelon of long-distance GT racing.Established in 2016, the series’ purpose couldn’t be simpler: reward the manufacturer and drivers who achieve the best collective results in the world’s greatest standalone endurance events. The proliferation of GT3, built on more than a decade of manufacturer involvement and SRO’s Balance of Performance stability, has resulted in it becoming the de facto senior class for all of the world’s most prestigious GT races. This, as well as using the same Pirelli tyres, offers manufacturers an incentive to compete in all such events by employing regional customer teams without the expense of freighting cars around the world.

FARFUS AND VDL BROS END WRT AND BMW’S BATHURST VICTORY DROUGHT

+ Marciello, Rossi and Weerts complete Bavarian 1-2
+ Fourth podium in as many years for 75 Express trio
+ Result:
Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour

BMW has scored maximum Intercontinental GT Challenge points in 2025’s season opener at the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour where Augusto Farfus and Van der Linde brothers Kelvin and Sheldon beat team-mates Raffaele Marciello, Valentino Rossi and Charles Weerts.

10 seconds separated the #32 and #46 M4 GT3s, while Kenny Habul, Jules Gounon and Luca Stolz extended theirs and 75 Express’ collective podium streak at Mount Panorama to four races by finishing one second further back.

BMW was one of this event’s heavyweights in its production car days but had never won in the GT3 era despite twice claiming pole. WRT’s victory drought at Australia’s International Enduro wasn’t quite as long but did stretch back to 2018 – remarkable considering its success elsewhere.

Sheldon and Kelvin, meanwhile, have become the first siblings to share a winning car since David and Geoff Brabham won the Bathurst 1000 – also with BMW, incidentally – in 1997.

Craft-Bamboo’s Mercedes-AMG led away from pole but was overhauled before the end of the opening stint by a flying Chaz Mostert who started Arise Racing’s Ferrari fifth. The Supercars ace then established a nine-second advantage before pitstop strategies amidst several Safety Car periods jumbled the order.

Instead, it was Absolute Racing’s Porsche and WRT’s BMWs that became the regular frontrunners through mid-morning. But while the 911’s speed appeared to tail off, the M4s maintained their metronomic pace out front as first #46 and then #32 became the de facto leaders.

Further caution periods kept their advantage in check but by mid-afternoon it was clear that the Van der Lindes and Farfus were in the box seat despite Craft-Bamboo’s Mercedes-AMG, the Arise Ferrari and Absolute’s Porsche remaining within striking distance as the race ticked into its final quarter.

The 296 and 911 were first to fall away, while earlier strategy calls left Craft-Bamboo’s Maximilian Götz, Jayden Ojeda and Lucas Auer – who set pole yesterday – just outside of the optimum refuelling window. Pitting six minutes before the finish cost them a certain podium.

Second place instead went to WRT’s other BMW, but only after Marciello passed Gounon around the outside of the kink via a trip over Conrod Straight’s grass in the final 10 minutes.

The 75 Express Mercedes-AMG is always a contender at Bathurst and so it was again despite the nature of its Pro class crew. Habul completed his drive time before half distance and crucially remained on the lead lap to give Stolz and Gounon a chance of closing down the leaders.

Their cause was helped by Arise having to stop late for fuel. Daniel Serra and Broc Feeney were as fast as always, but it was Mostert who caught everyone’s attention in the final hour when he relieved Kelvin van der Linde of the lead. WRT would have been unconcerned given the Ferrari’s final late fuel stop was already well telegraphed, but it did serve as a reminder of what might have been for the reigning GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS champions who ultimately finished fourth.

Craft-Bamboo and Absolute completed the top six for Mercedes-AMG and Porsche, respectively, while Heart of Racing by SPS’s Ian James, Ross Gunn and Zach Robichon won the event’s Bronze class in seventh overall.

Behind, Arise Racing’s other Ferrari finished eighth on the road but scored seventh place IGTC points for its manufacturer. And the Bend Motorsport Park’s 911 rounded out Intercontinental’s top eight in 10th overall.

Notable retirees included GruppeM’s Mercedes-AMG, which went hard into the wall exiting The Chase, and Jamec/MPC’s Audi that qualified second but ended its race deep in the gravel trap overlooked by the Rydges Hotel.

IGTC now moves on to the ADAC Ravenol 24h Nürburgring on June 19-22 before hopping across the German/Belgian border one week later for the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa.

MAN OF THE AUER: CRAFT-BAMBOO AND MERCEDES-AMG BAG MEGUIAR’S BATHURST 12 HOUR POLE

+ Austrian beats Ricardo Feller’s Jamec/MPC Audi to top spot
+ Result:
Combined Qualifying

Craft-Bamboo and Mercedes-AMG will start 2025’s Intercontinental GT Challenge season opener from pole position thanks to Lucas Auer who claimed his first Allan Simonsen Trophy at the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour.

The Austrian earnt his place in the top 10 shootout by setting seventh fastest time across Q1 and Q2. Clearly, however, he’d saved a little more for when it mattered most in the final 15-minute Pirelli Pole Battle.

His first and, as it turned out, only flying lap – 2m01.2760s – was the second fastest pole time in 12 Hour history and 0.1250s quicker than Ricardo Feller’s best in the Jamec Racing / Team MPC Audi that earlier topped combined qualifying.

Maro Engel heads up row two in GMR’s Mercedes-AMG after chipping away at Auer’s time. The German ultimately fell 0.284s shy but did get the better of WRT’s #32 BMW driven by Sheldon van der Linde. Last year’s pole winner opted to wait before joining the action but couldn’t repeat the same feat as 12 months ago.

The best of Arise Racing’s Ferraris was next up courtesy of Chaz Mostert who also made gains as the session developed. He ended up less than 0.02s behind Van der Linde and almost two tenths clear of The Bend’s Laurin Heinrich whose Porsche completed a top six comprising five manufacturers.

Two-time 12 Hour winner Luca Stolz starts seventh for 75 Express, while Scott Andrews’ Audi moved up two places after scraping into the Pole Battle at Matt Campbell’s expense.

Cam Waters paced Practice 5 and 6 earlier today so might be disappointed with qualifying  STM’s Mercedes-AMG ninth, one place ahead of the event’s best placed Bronze entry driven by Lee Holdsworth.

Two pro entries – Absolute’s Porsche and WRT’s #46 BMW – failed to reach the Pole Battle and therefore start where they qualified in 11th and 12th, respectively.

However, with half a day’s racing ahead of them both can still score significant IGTC points for their manufacturers.

The Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour goes green at 05:45 AEDT (GMT +11) on Sunday. International viewers can watch it live on SRO’s GT World YouTube channel, while Seven Network, Fox Sports and Sky Sport NZ will broadcast the same coverage in Australia and New Zealand where geo restrictions apply.

PREVIEW: 2025 INTERCONTINENTAL GT CHALLENGE CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF AT MOUNT PANORAMA

+ Ferrari joins BMW, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche on IGTC roster
+ IGTC entry list:
Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour

Four manufacturers – BMW, Mercedes-AMG, reigning champions Porsche and series returnees Ferrari – will contest the 2025 Intercontinental GT Challenge, which begins this weekend at the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour (January 31 – February 2).

Together, the quartet comprises 14 of the 19 GT3 entries that will battle from just-before-dawn-to-not-quite-dusk at the spectacular Mount Panorama circuit.

Per tradition, Australia’s International Enduro kicks off a globe-trotting campaign that features four more iconic venues: the Nurburgring Nordschleife, Spa-Francorchamps, Indianapolis and, for the first time since 2019, Suzuka.

Bathurst’s entry is, as usual, bursting with quality. Reigning Intercontinental GT Challenge champion Charles Weerts features in one of two factory BMWs, Porsche can count on two thirds of its victorious 2024 Bathurst crew Matt Campbell and Ayhancan Güven, and Mercedes-AMG reunites its most recent 12 Hour winners: Kenny Habul, Luca Stolz and Jules Gounon.

But there’s also Ferrari, which is very much the dark horse in more ways than one. Its first IGTC start since 2022 comes courtesy of reigning GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS champions Arise Racing and a particularly eye-catching Pro class line up.

IGTC’s format remains unchanged from 2024. While all entries from each registered manufacturer can score points, ultimately only the two best placed finishers will contribute to their constructor’s total. The same constraint does not apply to the drivers’ championship, points for which are awarded to IGTC’s overall top 10.

Selected practice sessions, qualifying, the Pirelli Pole Battle and race are all live on SRO’s GT World YouTube channel from Friday 31 January. The full broadcast schedule will be confirmed this week. Fans in Australia and New Zealand can watch via Seven and Fox Sports.

BMW | 2x M4 GT3

BMW was this event’s benchmark in its former production class days but is yet to win in the GT3 era with either the M6 or M4, which makes its final factory appearance this weekend before switching over to the new-for-2025 Evo specification.

Last year’s pole and fastest lap set by Sheldon van der Linde demonstrated the now outgoing model’s potential around Mount Panorama where current factory squad Team WRT last won in 2018 with Audi. 12 months on and the younger VDL is back for more, albeit alongside brother Kelvin who joined BMW’s factory roster at the start of this season. Former IGTC champion Augusto Farfus completes a potent line up.

But regardless of the result, it’s WRT’s other entry that will undoubtedly pinch the headlines thanks to Valentino Rossi who makes his third appearance at Bathurst. He’s paired with Weerts and Raffaele Marciello who, perhaps remarkably given his glittering CV, has never won Down Under.

FERRARI | 2x 296 GT3

You’ll be hard pushed to find a better combination on this year’s grid than reigning Supercars champion Will Brown, current GT World Challenge Australia champion Chaz Mostert, and Ferrari factory driver Daniel Serra who spearhead Maranello’s IGTC return with Arise Racing.

Of those three it’s possibly Mostert who could make the biggest contribution this weekend. A two-time Allan Simonsen Pole Award recipient and Bathurst 1000 winner, the Supercars ace certainly knows the fastest route over the top, but also has experience of the team and 296 thanks to his title-winning 2024 season.

The other Ferrari features a four-driver Pro-Am crew that also boasts plenty of relevant experience in the shape of Arise regulars Jaxon Evans and Elliot Schutte, plus works FIA WEC star Alessio Rovera. GT World Challenge Australia runner-up Brad Schumacher completes the quartet.

MERCEDES-AMG | 8x GT GT3

Eight entries, half of them boasting pro line ups, give Mercedes-AMG a very good chance of reclaiming the Bathurst crown it lost to Porsche last season.

Two of those, run by GMR and Craft-Bamboo, comprise full works rosters, while 75 Express – the new name for SunEnergy1 – reunites the winning combination from 2022 and 2023: Stolz, Gounon and Habul. The line up, which is again registered in the Pro class despite Habul not being a professional driver, was just 2.6s away from making it three-in-a-row last year. Few would bet against the trio returning to the top step in 2025.

Scott Taylor Motorsport’s Merc sees Supercars royalty Craig Lowndes again join the championship’s current stars Cam Waters and Thomas Randle. But it’s the two full factory combinations that will most likely challenge given their experience of the car and track.

No-one has qualified a GT3 car faster around Mount Panorama than Maro Engel, and after a particularly strong 2024 that featured GT World Challenge Europe titles and FIA GT Cup glory at Macau the German is eager to finally add his name to the 12 Hour winner’s trophy. He, Mik Grenier and Maxime Martin, who switched from BMW over the winter, are undoubtedly amongst this year’s favourites.

But don’t bet against Craft-Bamboo’s trio, either. Maximilian Götz, Lucas Auer and Jayden Ojeda are bound to be there or thereabouts come the finish.

Grove Racing, Heart of Racing, Supabarn/Tigani and 111 Racing complete Mercedes-AMG’s contingent.

PORSCHE | 2x 911 GT3 R

Grello and Manthey might be absent this year but there are still significant remnants of Porsche’s victory 12 months ago when Laurens Vanthoor, Campbell and Güven finally ended Gounon’s winning streak. Now the Australian and Turk are attempting to create their own legacy with Absolute Racing – a team that Campbell claimed pole with in 2020. They’re joined by last season’s Pro-Am winner Alessio Picariello at an event that kickstarted Porsche’s ultimately successful IGTC manufacturers’ championship assault.

There’s also a second 911 in town and it too features factory support in the shape of Laurin Heinrich. However, as a Pro-Am entry The Bend Motorsport Park-backed Porsche’s success is dependent on the Shahin brothers Yasser and Sam, as well as the second pro, Morris Schuring.

2024 champions crowned at SRO Awards in Paris

he stars of international GT racing gathered in Paris on Tuesday (17 December) for the annual SRO Motorsports Group Awards.

The traditional end-of-year celebration was staged across two venues: first, in the afternoon, at the Pavillon Vendôme, and then later amid the marble columns of the historic Pavillon Cambon Capucines, which was completed in 1914 as the headquarters of Crédit Foncier de France and has since been reborn as an events space.

On Tuesday night it welcomed some of the biggest names in world motorsport. Among the prize-winners Mercedes-AMG retained the global Fanatec GT World Challenge powered by AWS title for a sixth year in succession, Porsche collected the Intercontinental GT Challenge manufacturers' crown, and the inaugural GT4 Manufacturer Ranking was won by BMW.

The champions of Fanatec GT Europe, Fanatec GT Asia and IGTC were presented with their trophies, while representatives from Fanatec GT America and Fanatec GT Australia were in Paris to join the festivities after staging their own awards ceremonies on home soil.

Following a truly unforgettable victory at the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa, two-thirds of Comtoyou Racing’s winning crew – Marco Sørensen and Mattia Drudi – were on hand to collect their commemorative jackets and lifetime passes covering all global SRO events.

The FIA Motorsport Games was another highlight of 2024, the multidisciplinary event completing a successful and record breaking third edition in Valencia. Having emerged with the biggest medal haul, host nation Spain was honoured during the Parisian evening. There was recognition for the Fanatec GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli and GT4 European Series powered by RAFA Racing Club champions, as well as those from the FFSA French GT Championship, FFSA TC France, and the British GT Championship.

In the latter series, Sandy Mitchell received the Allan Simonsen Award, which is presented to a driver who embodies the same speed and spirit as the much-missed Danish racer, while the Philippe Charriol Award – which celebrates an outstanding amateur driver – was won by two-time British GT champion and Beechdean AMR owner Andrew Howard. There were trophies for this year’s SRO Esports stars, while Team WRT and L’Espace Bienvenue were recognised for their sustainability efforts in GT3 and GT4 respectively.

Tuesday’s gala event came a little over two weeks after the 2024 season closed in spectacular style with Fanatec GT Europe and GT4 Europe competing at Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia. Indeed, it represents the very last word on an extraordinary year, one that will be principally remembered for the celebrations that marked the centenary CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa.

And, as ever, thoughts will quickly turn to what comes next. The 2025 campaign launches in suitable style with the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour at Mount Panorama, which reprises its traditional race date on Sunday 2 February. Australia’s International Enduro hosts the opening rounds of both Intercontinental GT Challenge and GT World Challenge global, and kicks off another packed SRO campaign featuring approximately 200 races on four continents.
