Horstman Hustles to Drought Breaking Win in GLSS Season Opener

Crystal, MI - Despite all odds that suggested the show wouldn’t unfold, officials with the Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP (GLSS) and Crystal Motor Speedway were determined to get the 2025 GLSS season underway Saturday night. Even though chilly temperatures greeted the fans, they came out in full force to see the start of the Michigan CAT GLSS Sprint Division, which turned out just as strong with 31 cars on the property.

The night began with Ti22 Performance Qualifying, where nearly a dozen drivers broke the old Crystal Motor Speedway track record. In the end, Canada’s Ryan Turner got the last laugh with just five cars left to qualify after him, when he turned in a shattering 12.039. Later in the night, however, Horstman shattered the record again in his heat race when he blistered an 11.954-second lap, averaging over 112 MPH. Corbin Gurley, Mike Keegan, Horstman, and Chase Dunham earned Heat Race wins while Turner earned the B-Main victory.

The first event of the season was set to be led to green by three-time-and-defending GLSS Champion Max Stambaugh with Scotty Thiel to his outside, however, a jumped start moved Stambaugh back a row and put Horstman on the point. Another caution before the first lap could be completed when Chase Ridenour and Eli Lakin tangled at the exit of turn two, resulting in a tore up No.38 for Ridenour.

Once the race got the first lap completed, the rest was history. Thiel led the opening rotation, but entered turn three a little hard and nearly went over the banking, was completely sideways, and managed to gather it back up but not before Horstman took advantage on the inside and took the lead for lap number two. On an absolute rail, Horstman set pace to work through lapped traffic. Meanwhile, Thiel was busting out all the stops to get back to Horstman’s tail tank while they lapped through the 13th spot. While Thiel was close enough to get to Horstman’s inside in turns one and two, he couldn’t complete the pass.

Horstman held on for the win over Thiel, Keith Sheffer, Jr earned the Operating Engineers 324 Hard Charger going from 11th to 3rd, Dunham held serve in fourth as did Dustin Daggett in fifth. For Horstman, the win on Saturday night snapped a winless streak that dates back to June of 2023, when he went to victory lane at I-96 Speedway. Horstman now moves within one feature win of Daggett on the all-time GLSS wins list, with 25.

The next event for the Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP is Friday, April 25th at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, MI. Advanced tickets are available at GreatLakesSuperSprints.com. Follow the Great Lakes Super Sprints on Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, and YouTube.

Great Lakes Super Sprints Roll to I-96 Speedway Friday

Merrill, MI - The second race of the 2025 season for the Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP (GLSS) takes the Best in the Midwest to Lake Odessa, Michigan’s I-96 Speedway. Directly located off Interstate 96 in western Michigan, I-96 Speedway is one of the biggest and fastest stops on the 2025 Tour. Some of the GLSS greats have mastered I-96, while other superstars of the series have struggled to find a way to earn greatness at the 4/10ths mile oval.

Last season’s planned April appearance at I-96 Speedway was washed away by Mother Nature, who appears to be getting her act together for this weekend’s contest. The first race at I-96 in 2024 was in May and saw 2018 GLSS Champion, Dustin Daggett hold off I-96 Speedway foe, Jared Horstman for the win. Craig Mintz took the Ragged Edge Racing team to third, while Stambaugh and Dalman rounded out the top five. When the series returned in July, Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame driver, Jason Blonde held off 2021 champion, Ryan Ruhl for his first career GLSS win. The August race brought Mintz to Victory Lane ahead of Daggett and Keith Sheffer, Jr.

The start of the 2025 season was thrilling Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway. After Ryan Turner broke the track record by nearly three-tenths-of-a-second, Jared Horstman took another tenth-of-a-second off the record in his heat race. Horstman went on to lead 24 of the 25 laps that went green-to-checkered after two cautions on the opening lap.

Thanks to his Saturday night win, Horstman now draws even with Dustin Daggett for all-time wins with GLSS at 26. Since 2016, 36 features have been completed at I-96, of them, Daggett and Horstman have 16 wins between them; eight each. Horstman and Daggett are both two-time GLSS Champions, thanks to Daggett’s Ohio CAT Division Championship in 2024.

Advanced tickets are available at www.GreatLakesSuperSprints.com. Fans who can’t make it to I-96 Speedway Friday night can catch all the action live at www.GreatLakesSprints.Tv. In addition to the Great Lakes Super Sprints, Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Street Stocks, and Compacts will be in action.

Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP Season Begins Saturday at Crystal

Merrill, MI - After being delayed one week due to Mother Nature, the Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP (GLSS) are ready to kick off the 2025 season this Saturday, April 19th, at Michigan’s Crystal Motor Speedway. A host to GLSS three times in 2024, the show on Saturday is the first of four scheduled stops at Crystal this season.

Last year, Lagrange, Ohio’s Kasey Jedrzejek picked up the first win of the season at Crystal. Mike Keegan and Phil Gressman led the field to the green flag. The No.11N came from the sixth starting spot after winning his heat earlier in the night. Phil Gressman and Jared Horstman were also heat race winners in the May 4th show last season. An early yellow brought the field back to a single-file restart, which allowed Jedrzejek to start searching for speed around the track.  In heavy lapped traffic during a long green-flag run, Jedrzejek took the lead from Mike Keegan en route to the win over the 22-car field.

When the Tour returned to Crystal in June of 2024, Jedrzejek’s notebook didn’t let him down. Starting on the outside of the front row alongside eventual Champion, Max Stambaugh, Jedrzejek again rolled to victory lane, although more challenged by Stambaugh than in his first win of the year.

Finally, in August, fans were treated to another barn-burner when Keith Sheffer, Jr, Kelsey Ivy, and Dustin Daggett. Sheffer jumped out to the early race lead from the inside of the second row, but after an early race caution, Ivy was able to put her No.20i to the front of the field. After a late race restart, Daggett found speed on the bottom of the race track and was able to take the lead from Ivy with just a handful of laps to go. Daggett was able to hang on to collect the win.

In addition to GLSS, Crystal Motor Speedway will also feature IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pro Stocks & Trucks, and Sport Compacts. Gates are set to open at 4:00 PM on Saturday, with racing scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Advanced tickets for Saturday’s Great Lakes Super Sprints Michigan CAT Division opener are available at CrystalMotorSpeedway.com. Learn more about the Great Lakes Super Sprints at GreatLakesSprints.com and find Great Lakes Super Sprints on Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

GLSS Weekend at I-75 Raceway Cancelled Due to Weather; USCS Rescheduling for May

Sweetwater, TN - Officials with the Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP (GLSS), along with officials from the United Sprint Car Series and I-75 Racewa,y have announced the cancellation of the races scheduled for this weekend, Friday and Saturday, April 11th and 12th. Already saturated grounds, mixed with more forecasted rain on Friday and cool temperatures on Saturday, led to the decision.

The annual meeting of GLSS and USCS at I-75 Raceway has taken place in April since 2023 and was set to be the kick-off to the 2025 GLSS Tour season. The GLSS portion of the weekend will not be made up, however, the USCS will return to I-75 Raceway on Friday and Saturday, May 2nd and 3rd while the Great Lakes Super Sprints will contest the Ohio CAT opener on Friday, May 2nd at Limaland Motorsports Park.

The Great Lakes Super Sprints season will now begin on Saturday, April 19th at Crystal Motor Speedway in Crystal, MI and also serves as the opener for the Michigan CAT Division. USAC WESTERN STATES MIDGETS TAKE ON PLACERVILLE’S NOR-CAL CHALLENGE SATURDAY

Merrill, MI - The 2025 season for Luke Griffith is about getting back to what they know and back to victory lane. In 2024, the Sandusky, Ohio native went back and forth between winged 410s and winged 360s, racing across the Midwest with limited success in both divisions. In 2025, Griffith is back to 360 racing with the Ohio CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP in his family-owned No.11G.

In 2023, Griffith had a career year in the final outing with NRA, earning a pair of wins, six top fives, and 12 top ten finishes in 16 starts. Then, in 2024, while bouncing around in the 410 as well, Griffith finished inside the top 10 in two of his three starts and knocked off a top-five finish at Limaland Motorsports Park coming home second behind Devon Dobie. The up-and-down season in 2024 helped Griffith lock in on goals for 2025.

“More than anything, we’re looking to find our way back to the success we had during our 2023 campaign,” Griffith explains. “My Dad, Austin Troyer, and I make a great team and are looking to get back to having fun at the race track as much as possible.”

The easiest way to have fun is to win. While the competition has made earning a win more challenging in recent years with the Great Lakes Super Sprints, Griffith will have plenty of opportunity to accomplish a victory at tracks he’s had success at in the past. Limaland Motorsports Park dots the calendar six times this season, the home of Griffiths's two most recent wins in 2023. Likewise, the only time Griffith finished outside the top 10 that season was at Atomic Speedway (not on the schedule), Waynesfield Raceway Park (two dates), Eldora Speedway, and a midseason stop at Limaland.

Griffith’s drive toward another successful season begins on Friday, May 2nd at Limaland Motorsports Park. While Griffith’s focus is primarily on the Ohio CAT Division, it’s likely that Griffith will make a few trips north to the Michigan CAT region throughout the summer as well.

Stambaugh Returns to Great Lakes Super Sprints to Defend Threepeat; Eyes First Ever Divisional Sweep

Merrill, MI - Anyone who is hoping to win a Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP Championship knows they need to get through Max Stambaugh and his Smith Motorsports No.71H to do so.

Since 2021, Smith Motorsports has locked down the Championships with GLSS; a stat that only changed slightly when the North and South Divisions were introduced in 2023. Jared Horstman won the final NRA title in 2023 to take the south while Stambaugh and Smith Motorsports took the Tour and the Michigan Region. Then, in 2024, Dustin Daggett stopped Stambaugh from getting the clean sweep by winning the Ohio CAT (South) Division. Stambaugh says that the overall goals don’t change, but he doesn’t ignore the possibility.

“My goal is just to win the Tour again,” Stambaugh said. “I mean, it stung a little bit last year not getting all three, but we want to win the overall Tour.”

Stambaugh comes into 2025 in his fourth season behind the wheel of the Smith Motorsports No.71H. Last year, the combination led to six wins with GLSS and seven total wins throughout the season. Stambaugh was wildly consistent in his bid for his third straight title, earning 28 top 10s and 19 top fives in 31 starts on his way to the Tour and Michigan CAT Division Championships. Stambaugh says the success he’s had with Smith Motorsports the last three seasons is due, in part, to team chemistry.

“Not having to rebuild every year is a big deal,” Stambaugh explained. “I’ve done my fair share of jumping around - being able to stay with Steve and Michelle (Smith) and keep the same guys on the team helps us come out of the gate ready to win.”

Stambaugh realizes that reaching four consecutive titles is a large task to overcome. Being at the top of the GLSS food chain four straight seasons is an impressive run for Smith Motorsports, but Stambaugh knows that could come to an end at any minute.

“A lot of the teams have gotten a lot better,” Stambaugh says of teams hoping to knock them out of the Championship. “Our job now is to stay on top. Being known as a 360 ace in a sense, keeping that reputation up to have a name like Kyle Sauder and Darren Long.”

Earning the title in 2025, however, will require a little bit more out of Stambaugh than in seasons prior. This year, to complete the full Tour schedule, the Elida, OH native says he’ll be preparing his family car for select starts, including Limaland Motorsports Park.

“There’s a couple of races that I’m going to run the family car to fill the schedule out,” Stambaugh explained. “This year is special to get my car out because of me and my dad buying some new cars, and he’s the one that originally got the whole deal going for me.”

The bid for a fourth consecutive championship with the Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP begins on Friday and Saturday, April 11th & 12th at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, TN. Stambaugh returns to I-75 Raceway after sweeping the event last season.
