Ryan Dumas Picks Up First SCLS Win of 2025 in Wild Night at Barona

El Cajon, CA — August 18, 2025 — Defending SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series champion Ryan Dumas finally broke into victory lane in 2025, scoring his first win of the season in dramatic fashion at Barona Speedway last Saturday night. What began as one of the strangest, most chaotic openings in recent SCLS memory ended with one of the most thrilling last laps of the year.

Point leader Peter Benker of Alpine and his teenage son Cody led the field to the green flag for the 20-lapper. Dumas lined up in row two alongside David Taft of Ramona, with James Squire III of Lakeside, Chase Wilson of San Diego, Tyler Warner of Alpine, and Jason Arnolde of San Diego in rows three and four.

The opening laps were anything but smooth.

  • Attempt #1: Taft clipped Cody Benker entering turn one, spinning the teenager. Cody continued, but Taft slammed the wall and was done for the night.

  • Attempt #2: Mid-pack contact on the front stretch nearly sent Squire over, forcing another yellow.

  • Attempt #3: Officials went single-file to calm the chaos, but a five-car tangle before the start brought yet another caution. To make matters worse, Arnolde’s car caught fire, bringing out a red flag during the yellow period.

  •

On the fourth try, the race finally went green—and stayed that way to the finish.

Benker led early, but Dumas and Cody swapped second place before Dumas secured the spot on lap two. By halfway, the top three were comfortably ahead, while the crowd’s attention shifted to a furious battle for fourth between “Shuga’” Shane Sexton of Warner Springs and Deejay Dumas of San Diego. Their slide jobs and crossovers lasted over a dozen laps, with Sexton ultimately prevailing to earn the Hard Charger Award.  He also recorded the fastest lap of the race.

Out front, Benker looked destined for his second win of the year. But in turn four on lap 19, everything changed. A lapped car bobbled in front of Benker in turn four, forcing him to brake. Dumas, in his bright red AG Sand Cars/Triple X Chassis #80, seized the moment, diving inside to grab the lead as the white flag waved.

The last lap was chaos. Dumas slid off the bottom in turn one, nearly handing the lead back to Benker.  He then regrouped and surged past both Benker and the stubborn lapped car exiting turn two. Coming off turn four, Dumas bobbled again, but somehow gathered it up to score a narrow, nail-biting first victory of the season.

Benker settled for second—his sixth top-five in eight races—followed by Cody Benker, Sexton, and Deejay Dumas.

In the preliminaries, Taft won heat one over Peter Benker and Wilson, while Ryan Dumas topped heat two ahead of Cody Benker and Squire.

With his runner-up finish, Peter Benker has a 104-point lead over his son heading into the next SCLS race at Barona on September 13, when the cars return with wings on. Dalton Landon of San Diego sits third, just one point behind Cody Benker, with Deejay Dumas in fourth and Sexton in fifth.

Fired-Up Jeff Dyer Wins SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series Summer Showdown Finale

El Cajon, CA — August 5, 2025 — Fired up after being penalized two positions during Friday’s main event, Jeff Dyer rebounded in a big way to dominate the Saturday night finale of the inaugural SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series (SCLS) Summer Showdown at Barona Speedway. In addition to scoring the 20-lap main event win, the Yucca Valley racer was the high point driver for the weekend, earning the title "King of the Summer Showdown" taking home a $300 bonus.

All 21 cars from Friday’s incident-free program returned on Saturday, joined by long-time Barona regular James Squire III, bringing the field to 22. Ramona’s David Taft also joined the mix, piloting the #80 car previously driven by Ryan Dumas on night one.

Deejay Dumas grabbed the pole for the main event, with Taft on the outside of the front row. “Shugah” Shane Sexton and Dyer shared row two, followed by Parker Dumas and Brent Horn in row three.  2021 POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car champion Grant Sexton and El Cajon rookie Braydin Collie were in row four.  Friday night winner Eric Greco started deep in the field on the inside of row eight.

When the green flag flew, Taft—who won at Barona in June 2024—charged to the front with Dumas, Dyer, and Shane Sexton in pursuit. Coming off turn four on lap one, the top three were nearly three-wide, but Taft secured the early lead at the line.

Dyer moved into second on lap two and immediately applied heavy pressure on Taft. Shane Sexton slipped by Dumas for third on lap three, putting himself in position to challenge the leaders.

On lap four, Taft had a four-car-length cushion entering turn one, but he went a little wide coming off two.  That gave Dyer the opening he needed. He darted to the inside and grabbed the lead going down the back straight. Taft attempted to counter in turn three, but Dyer had the preferred line and surged ahead. Within two laps, Dyer had built an eight-car-length advantage.

Sexton tried to wrestle second away from Taft on lap six, but the latter held strong in his bright red #80. Meanwhile, Dyer hit lapped traffic on lap eight and extended his lead to nearly a third of a straightaway by the halfway mark. Taft remained in second with Sexton, who was engaged in a fierce battle with Deejay Dumas, third.

The only caution of the main—and just the second of the entire weekend—came on lap 14 when Kelly Weitzel and Dalton Sexton came to a stop in turn two. The yellow erased Dyer’s sizeable lead and stacked the field for a seven-lap sprint to the finish.

Taft lined up on Dyer’s rear bumper for the restart, followed by Sexton and Dumas brothers Deejay and Parker. But once the race resumed, Dyer quickly re-established control. Taft distanced himself from Sexton, who had his hands full with a late-race charge from cousin Grant.

Dyer sliced through traffic with precision over the final circuits and crossed the finish line with nearly a half-straightaway lead. Taft held on for second, backing up his runner-up result from June. “Shugah” Shane Sexton completed the podium, with Grant Sexton in fourth.  Parker Dumas rounded out the top five.

Greco, who is heading off to Boise State University this week, earned the Keys Brothers Hard Charger honors after advancing from 15th to 7th in the main event.

The win marked Dyer’s second SCLS victory in three Barona starts this year. In addition to his $300 high points bonus and race purse, he also received a product box from Spec 9 Eyewear and a King Desktop Box courtesy of Big Mark Racing.

Heat race winners on Saturday were Deejay Dumas, Grant Sexton, Dyer, and Braydin Collie.  Dumas then went on to win the four-lap D&W Dash over the other heat race winners.

The SCLS has four races remaining in its 2025 campaign, all at Barona Speedway. The next event is a wingless race on August 16th. In the current point standings, Peter Benker holds an 83-point lead over Landon Dalton, while his teenage son Cody Benker trails Dalton by just 17 points. The battle for positions four through seven remains tight, with Arnolde, Deejay Dumas, Shane Sexton, and Tyler Warner all within 24 points of each other.

Eric Greco Sweeps Night #1 of SCLS Inaugural Summer Showdown at Barona Speedway

El Cajon, CA — August 4, 2025 — Palmdale’s Eric Greco Jr. was untouchable on Friday night at Barona Speedway, sweeping every event he entered on Night #1 of the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series (SCLS) Inaugural Summer Showdown. The college student dominated the evening—winning his heat race, the D&W Dash, and capping it off with a thrilling victory in the 20-lap main event.

Eric Greco after his win in night #1 of the SoCal Lightning Sprint Summer Showdown.  SCLS photo.

The win was Greco’s second of the season and came in his second start in the SCLS this year. It was also his first appearance of 2025 at the tight quarter-mile oval located in San Diego County.

A solid field of 21 Lightning Sprint Cars showed up for the Summer Showdown opener, and all 21 took the green flag in the feature. El Cajon’s Deejay Dumas and Braydin Collie started from the front row, with San Diego brothers Parker and Ryan Dumas behind them. Greco, starting from row three, lined up alongside June Barona winner “Shugah” Shane Sexton who resides in Warner Springs. The fourth row featured 2021 POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series champion Grant Sexton of Lakeside and USAC/CRA veteran Jeff Dyer of Yucca Valley.

At the drop of the green, Deejay Dumas led the opening charge, but his time out front was brief. Dyer, a California Highway Patrol officer, made a bold move from eighth to take over the lead before the end of the first lap. Greco also charged forward quickly, climbing from sixth to second by lap two.

By lap five, the leaders had begun to spread out, and Dyer found himself closing in on soon-to-be lappers. That changed at the halfway point when Grant Sexton came to a stop near the turn four wall, bringing out the race’s only caution.

On the restart, Dyer resumed in the lead with Greco in hot pursuit. Collie held third with Deejay and Parker Dumas rounding out the top five. Soon after things went green, Parker Dumas surged into third and was one of - if not the - fastest car on the track.

As Dyer once again hit heavy lapped traffic, Greco closed the gap and launched multiple bids for the lead. With four laps remaining, he attempted a pass low in turn two, only to have Dyer shut the door. Seconds later, Greco briefly took over, but Dyer muscled back by to regain the spot.  To add to the battle, Parker Dumas caught the lead duo.

Suddenly, it was a three-car war at the front with traffic creating chaos and opportunity. With two laps to go, Dyer left just enough room on the bottom entering turn three, and Greco pounced. Driving the Sidewaze Designs/Janssen’s/RC Fuel Injection/Hinkle Performance/Quick Change Energy Drink/Triple X/Kawasaki ZX10 #8G, Greco made the pass stick and held off the challengers through the final laps.

The crowd was on its feet as Greco sealed the win. Behind him, Dyer and Parker Dumas battled side-by-side to the line. Dumas momentarily grabbed second in turn four, but Dyer edged him out with a stronger run off the final corner. Ryan Dumas finished fourth, and Collie rounded out the top five.

Afterward, track officials penalized Dyer two spots for jumping the lone restart of the night.  Even though he vehemently disagreed, he was sent back to fourth.  That moved Parker Dumas up to second and Ryan Dumas to third.

Alpine’s Peter Benker earned the Cakes By Kim Hard Charger Award, advancing eight spots forward from 14th to finish sixth.  In a nice family twist, Benker’s teenage son passed the second most cars, seven, going from 15th to eighth.

Heat race winners were Greco, Parker Dumas, Shane Sexton, and Collie. Greco bested the other heat race victors to take the four-lap D&W Dash.

El Cajon, CA — July 27, 2025 — The SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series is set for its biggest weekend of the 2025 season as it rolls into Barona Speedway for the 1st Annual SoCal Summer Shootout this Friday and Saturday, August 1–2. The action-packed doubleheader will feature the Winged Warriors of the SCLS alongside the always entertaining Dwarf Cars.

The high-stakes weekend includes two full nights of racing. Friday’s main event winner will pocket $650, while Saturday’s victor will take home $800. Both nights guarantee $100 to start the main events. Fans will also be treated to trophy dashes, with D&W Racing sweetening the pot—offering $100 on Friday and $200 on Saturday. An additional $300 bonus will be awarded to the weekend's top point earner, who will be crowned “King of the Summer Shootout.”

These races are pivotal in the battle for the 2025 SCLS championship. Alpine’s Peter Benker, runner-up in the inaugural season, leads the current standings with a 46-point advantage over San Diego’s Landon Dalton. Not far behind in third is Benker’s teenage son, Cody Benker, who trails by just 13 points for second place and 59 from the lead. Alpine’s Tyler Warner and San Diego’s Jason Arnolde round out the top five.

So far in 2025, the SCLS has seen four different winners in five events. Parker Dumas of San Diego swept the opening weekend at Imperial Valley Raceway, while Peter Benker, “Shugah’” Shane Sexton of
Warner Springs, and Jeff Dyer have each scored victories at Barona.

This weekend’s Shootout will also welcome several non regulars. Dyer, a California Highway Patrol Officer from Yucca Valley who regularly races in the USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Car Series and the California Lightning Sprints, returns to Barona alongside his 16-year-old teammate Drake Cardey of Riverside. Cardey, in his first season of lightning sprint competition, currently leads the CLS Rookie of the Year standings.  It will be his first ever race on the track.

Hot on Cardey’s heels in the CLS Rookie chase is fellow teen Braydin Collie of El Cajon who will be making his third SCLS start of the year and his first at Barona. After the weekend wraps up, Collie will hit the road for the Min-Kota Lightning Sprint Summer Nationals in Minnesota and North Dakota.

A special thanks goes out to the regular SCLS sponsors and this week’s bonus purse supporters: Grandpa Ron, hairbykellidumas, Kitchen Barn, CRS Supply, Broes Raceworks, Big Mark Motorsports, Bill’s Jerky, Blossom Valley Grading, Iron Alliance Engineering, Benker Racing, Keys Brothers, D&W Racing, American Racer Tires, and Cakes By Kim.
