OHIO MAGIC: Dale Blaney Drives to Storybook Sharon Victory with World of Outlaws

Tyler Carr

HARTFORD, OH (September 27, 2025) - There’s a certain magic when it comes to the Blaney family and Sharon Speedway.

It’s in their hometown of Hartford, OH. It’s the track they now own and operate. It’s where Dave Blaney pulled off one of the most shocking wins in World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series history in 2021.

On that night, 24 years after his most recent Series triumph, he took his own No. 10 to Victory Lane and sent the Sharon stands and all of Ohio into a joyous frenzy. Fast forward four years, and it was his brother Dale Blaney’s turn for a storybook Sharon moment driving his brother’s experimental Sprint Car.

The Greatest Show on Dirt rolled into Sharon for Saturday’s Federated Auto Parts Showdown, and it was clear that Dale had speed right out of the box with a record 54 cars in the pits. Blaney was nearly four tenths of a second faster than every other car in Flight B of WEDG High Performance Karts Hot Laps. He followed that up by setting Simpson Quick Time in his Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying group then topped his Heat Race. A fifth place finish in the Toyota Dash lined him up on row three for the 30-lap Feature.

The “Low Rider” rode by two cars on the opening circuit to settle into third. Six laps later Blaney snuck under Michael “Buddy” Kofoid for second. Fast forward four more rotations around Sharon, and he rolled around polesitter Cole Macedo for the lead. Blaney then built up an advantage in traffic as Kofoid snatched second from Macedo. A late restart set up a six-lap shootout to the end, and Kofoid gave it everything he had. Traffic slowed Blaney coming to the checkered, but he held on even as Kofoid sent it on the top in the final set of corners and made it close at the line. All of Sharon Speedway erupted as the checkered flag flew.

“I had the feeling that I was never going to win an Outlaw race ever again,” Blaney said. “I don’t race much. This is our sixth race this year. I haven’t run in seven weeks. The car was awesome. We just got it back together this week. I don’t know what to say. It’s great and cool to win this at Sharon Speedway. It’s the only place I’ve run this year. We’d love to get this car to a couple different places and see what it does. This is a special freaking night. I know that.

“There’re so many good young race car drivers out here, but to win a race at 61 (years old) is awesome. The racetrack had to be a certain way. It was a little slicker and slower, but I’m pretty good when it gets like that. My car is excellent when it gets like that. Starting fifth, I didn’t know if I could pass those guys, but I knew where I wanted to run, and we made it work.”

Blaney made history with the victory. At 61 years seven months and 28 days, he became the oldest driver to win a World of Outlaws Feature. It was also Blaney’s first Series triumph in 10 years and gave him a dozen for his career. He’s now raced just six times in 2025 with all of them happening at Sharon. Half of those starts have resulted in victories aboard his brother’s famed red No. 10. Blaney is the 15th different World of Outlaws winner in 2025.

Buddy Kofoid finished second for the second night in a row after falling a tad short on the final lap. Traffic gave him a shot late, but he just couldn’t quite find the run he needed exiting Turn 4. The Roth Motorsports team has now been on the podium in five consecutive races.

“I wanted traffic. My car is usually amazing in traffic,” Kofoid said. “He slipped up, and then I kind of got in his air and got me slipped up. When I got to the cushion, it straightened me out. I think a lapper moved in his lane into (Turn) 3, and then he moved up, and then I got there and hit the wall too many times and couldn’t get all the way to his outside to block him out. And then I hit the wall coming to the checkered, and it shot me down the track. I tried to send it and was close. I’m just happy for Dale and Dave.”

Ohio natives bookended the podium as Wooster’s Sheldon Haudenschild brought the Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing/NOS Energy Drink No. 17 home third. Saturday’s result gave Haudenschild a dozen top three finishes in 2025. Above all, he was thrilled for his fellow Buckeye’s special victory.

“Congrats to them. That’s truly pretty awesome,” Haudenschild said of the Blaney brothers. “Hats off to my guys too. (Kyle) Ripper busted his butt all night. We built a new car and worked on brakes all night. Ripper, Luke (Vaughn), and Jayce (Wallick) put the work in. Happy with this third place for this NOS Energy Drink, West Tennessee Expediting car. We’ll just keep rolling here.”

David Gravel and Logan Schuchart completed the top five.

Emerson Axsom moved the KCP Racing No. 18 from 25th to 17th to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger.

Cole Macedo claimed Simpson Quick Time honors in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying.

Heat Races belonged to David Gravel (NOS Energy Drink Heat One), Buddy Kofoid (Real American Beer Heat Two), Dale Blaney (WIX Filters Heat Three), and Sheldon Haudenschild (TheGreatestStoreonDirt.com Heat Four).

The SPA Technique #1 Redraw went to Cole Macedo.

Macedo also topped the Toyota Dash.

Danny Kuriger won the Micro-Lite Last Chance Showdown.

The Smith Titanium Brake Systems Break of the Race went to Zach Hampton.

BIG GAME BRAWLERS: Gravel Outduels Kofoid for Millstream Buckeye Brawl Victory

The first World of Outlaws race at Millstream since 1994 goes to the defending champion after a battle with last year’s Rookie of the Year

Tyler Carr

FINDLAY, OH (September 26, 2025) - West Coast. East Coast. It doesn’t matter where they’re at. David Gravel and Big Game Motorsports just win.

The defending World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series champions won $83,000 at Thunderbowl Raceway’s Dennis Roth Classic in California last Saturday. Six days later the scene shifted more than 2,000 miles east to Findlay, OH’s Millstream Speedway for Sheldon Haudenschild’s Buckeye Brawl presented by NOS Energy Drink. The result? Another trip to Victory Lane for Gravel and the Big Game crew.

The Watertown, CT native lined up on the front row, but it was polesitter Michael “Buddy” Kofoid leading the way early on. Gravel kept Kofoid within his sights to set up a duel between the current top two in World of Outlaws points and the two winningest drivers on the tour this year.

Gravel stalked Kofoid in traffic and made the winning move on Lap 9 when Kofoid slipped in traffic. The Big Game No. 2 rolled under the Roth Motorsports No. 83 out of Turn 4 to take the top spot. Several cautions lined Kofoid up alongside Gravel for restarts, but Gravel didn’t flinch. He kept Kofoid behind on his way to a $17,000 triumph. Add that to his Dennis Roth Classic paycheck, and that’s an even $100,000 for his last two days of work.

“Sometimes it’s better to be running second,” Gravel said. “Buddy was searching around and running low below guys, and I got really big runs on him on the top. He didn’t know. He was just trying to get by lapped cars, and I was lucky to take advantage of it. He kind of went low and slid across, and I kind of followed him in to hit the bottom really good and got in front of him off of (Turn) 4. That was the winning move. I knew it was going to come down to a corner or two.”

Gravel’s 15th victory of the year equaled his 2024 total, and he’s now three away from reaching his career best mark of 18 in a year. The 118th of his career also moved him within four of tying Danny Lasoski for the sixth most all-time with The Greatest Show on Dirt. Gravel becomes the sixth different World of Outlaws winner at Millstream.

Kofoid claimed the second spot worth $11,000 after leading the opening eight circuits. The Penngrove, CA native and the Roth crew have now pieced together 11 consecutive top five finishes. Despite continuing their recent stretch of consistency, Kofoid came away a bit disappointed after feeling like he let a potential checkered flag slip from his grasp.

“I just feel like that’s probably where I gave the race away is traffic,” Kofoid said. “It’s just disappointing. I feel like my car was good in traffic, but I feel like I made bad decisions in traffic. I got a good run and just anticipated them to maybe slide across or run the top, and they just went to the bottom, and I just lost the momentum. I did that probably one or two turns too many.”

The final spot on the podium went to Logan Schuchart as he kept his recent hot streak rolling aboard the Shark Racing No. 1S. Schuchart now has 15 straight finishes of sixth or better. The Hanover, PA native is happy with his team’s recent speed as his 12th year on the World of Outlaws tour winds down.

“I just felt like I was on the edge of disaster the whole time,” Schuchart explained. “Sometimes that’s fun. Sometimes that puts on the best races for fans, and that’s what we’re here for is to put on a show. I’m happy that we could put this thing on the podium.”

Garet Williamson and Kasey Jedrzejek completed the top five.

Darin Naida marched from 24th to 15th to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger.

Carson Macedo set a new track record and grabbed his seventh Simpson Quick Time of 2025 in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying.

Heat Races belonged to Carson Macedo (NOS Energy Drink Heat One), Garet Williamson (Real American Beer Heat Two), and Sheldon Haudenschild (WIX Filters Heat Three).

The SPA Technique #1 Redraw went to Buddy Kofoid.

Kofoid also topped the Toyota Dash.

Hunter Schuerenberg won the Micro-Lite Last Chance Showdown.

The Smith Titanium Brake Systems Break of the Race went to Carson Macedo.

US VERSUS THEM: The National Open’s Unique Atmosphere

The Williams Grove crown jewel puts Sprint Car racing’s fiercest rivalry on full display thanks to a wildly passionate fanbase

Trent Gower

MECHANICSBURG, PA (October 2, 2025) - Sprint Car racing’s crown jewels always provide a palpable atmosphere, but none resemble what the J&S Classics National Open at Williams Grove Speedway delivers.

The electricity of the National Open is built on rivalry.

On one side, you’ve got the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series. The longtime best Sprint Car drivers in the country invading tracks from coast to coast all year long. On the other side, you’ve got the Pennsylvania Posse. The toughest local competition the World of Outlaws face ready to defend their territory on the biggest stage with major money on the line.

Fans are perhaps the biggest contributors to the rivalry. Pennsylvanians are some of the most passionate in the nation, and they bring every ounce of energy to the National Open to cheer for the Posse and shower the World of Outlaws with boos.

“I think the hype of it from the fan standpoint is crazy, crazy good,” said six-time National Open winner, Donny Schatz. “The guys that they (Pennsylvania fans) come there and see weekly that they may not like are definitely who they like when the Outlaws come to town because I don’t know that they dislike the Outlaws, but they definitely cheer for their guys and kind of take them as a whole versus when they single them out on a weekly program. It’s pretty intense. A lot of hype and a lot of camaraderie on that side of it.”

Five years ago, a few unfortunate fans decided to poke the bear as Schatz was waiting to be pushed off for the 40-lap finale. The result was a record-extending sixth National Open title and a Schatz interview in Victory Lane that’ll be played for years.

“I remember sitting there waiting for the race to start, and people were screaming obscenities and all these different things,” Schatz recalled with a laugh. “You just kind of chuckle. You don’t normally get an opportunity like that. Obviously, we won the race, so it’s kind of the first thing that popped in my mind was, ‘Thanks for the extra motivation.’ There’s a lot of things you sit and chuckle at when you hear them, and obviously, I think there’s a lot of alcohol involved and a lot of people riling people up. It’s just all part of it.”

That rivalry also makes for a unique, rewarding feeling for the winner on the World of Outlaws side. Sure, it’s nice when the crowd is on your side and cheering for you in Victory Lane, but hearing the boos and knowing you’ve won as an enemy brings its own kind of satisfaction.

“It’s just a different type of gratification,” said Carson Macedo, the defending National Open champion. “You know, I won the Roth (Dennis Roth Classic) race last year, and it paid 83 grand. I remember distinctly getting to Victory Lane, and it’s a different type of happiness. When I won that race, I was around hometown fans, and I remember seeing most of the crowd, I can’t speak for everyone, being genuinely happy to see me win the race. You could hear it with their cheers and all that good stuff.

“There’s that type of happiness, then there’s the other kind you get at the National Open, which is seeing the fact that you’re really not supposed to win the event. You’re really kind of the rival that everybody is rooting against. To win the race and to win a race in my scenario, being from the state of California, you probably shouldn’t win is gratification in itself just because it’s so hard to kind of overcome those challenges. When you do and you’re the villain, so to speak. I feel like it’s just as gratifying as being on the other side of the fence.”

Then there is the other side of the fence. The feeling of competing in the “Keystone State’s” biggest event as a PA Posse representative. Few know it as well as Fayetteville, PA’s Lance Dewease. He’s one of the region’s most successful drivers ever with a résumé that includes five National Open triumphs in four different decades. Competitors like Dewease are well aware of the passion their fans display, and they don’t want to let them down.

“Our fans are diehard fans,” Dewease said. “They want us to beat the Outlaws, and we’re an area that has done it probably more regularly than other areas have. We take deep pride in doing it… It always means a lot. I pride myself on trying to win our big local shows. I’ve been fortunate enough to win it five times against the best in the business. It’s a pride thing with us guys here.”

The National Open creates an uncommon unity among the Pennsylvania fans. They have their week-to-week allegiances, but those vanish when the World of Outlaws come to town. If you’re representing the PA Posse, they’re cheering for you during the “Natty O.” Nothing proved this more than 2013.

“It doesn’t have to do with me, but I’ll use Fred Rahmer as an example,” Dewease said. “Fred Rahmer, during a weekly show there when he was still racing, wasn’t very well liked by our fans. But when he won his one and only National Open, there probably wasn’t a single ‘boo’ in the place for him because of two things: He was retiring, and because he beat the Outlaws. We always joke that they’ll hate you the week before, but they’ll love you the week of if you beat them (the World of Outlaws).

“I’m pretty low key. I’m a pretty mild-mannered person, so I don’t get those types of ups and downs, but I just think it shows how passionate the fans are because the guys they don’t care for week in and week out, they’ll cheer them on for the next two days of the National Open

That unity even extends to the drivers. The Pennsylvanians who want to beat each other more than anything at a weekly race still want to win when the World of Outlaws come to town, but if they can’t, one of their normal rivals might be the next best option.

“It’s a cool deal,” said, Freddie Rahmer, Fred Rahmer’s son and former World of Outlaws winner at Lincoln Speedway. “If we can’t be up front and have a chance at either night, I want somebody I race against every week to because it’s just better for the area. It’s good for everybody to represent our part of the country as best we can and see where you’re at versus everybody else… It’s just cool. I know the nights I’ve ran well or been with my dad or Stevie (Smith) or anybody involved, the fans are just so into it.”

The next edition of the National Open is ready to roll this weekend at “The Grove.” The fans are as passionate as ever. The World of Outlaws and PA Posse representatives are ready for battle. All of it promises to create an atmosphere that can’t be found anywhere else in the sport.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: 63rd National Open Brings World of Outlaws, PA Posse Rivalry to Peak

The World of Outlaws, Pennsylvania Posse, and a slew of invaders will battle at Williams Grove for $75,000 and bragging rights

t

MECHANICSBURG, PA (September 30, 2025) - The pinnacle of Sprint Car racing’s biggest rivalry is here.

All eyes are on Williams Grove Speedway for the 63rd running of the J&S Classics National Open. The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series is making its way to the historic Mechanicsburg, PA track, the Pennsylvania Posse are gearing up to defend home turf on the biggest stage, and many invaders from all over are hoping to spoil the party for both sides.

Fans are ready to pack Williams Grove this weekend (Oct. 3-4) and create an atmosphere unlike any other. Expect boos to rain down on World of Outlaws drivers when they roll by Beerhill and cheers for the locals. Week-to-week favorites are set aside for the “Natty O.” Normally, don’t cheer for Freddie Rahmer? Doesn’t matter. Normally, don’t cheer for Danny Dietrich? Doesn’t matter. The Pennsylvania fans want one thing this week, and that’s to see one of their own in Victory Lane.

It's more than bragging rights on the line in the “Keystone State.” Saturday’s finale boasts a $75,000-to-win/$2,500-to-start Feature purse. Overall, more than $260,000 is up for grabs over the two nights of racing.

The stage is set. It’s time for the National Open.

Let’s look at the weekend’s top storylines:

ADVANTAGE POSSE: Mother Nature has limited the number of battles between the World of Outlaws and PA Posse so far in 2025, but the locals hold the advantage heading into the National Open.

The World of Outlaws reopened the rivalry on top when Michael “Buddy” Kofoid claimed May’s Gettysburg Clash at Lincoln Speedway (Abbottstown, PA). Three days later, Dillsburg PA’s Anthony Macri evened the score by keeping the Morgan Cup at Williams Grove. July brought the third and most recent showdown as the sides met at BAPS Motor Speedway, and it was Macri again going to Victory Lane and putting the Posse ahead.

The locals even hold the lead in total podiums. The Posse has put five representatives on the podium while the World of Outlaws have claimed four top threes through the trio of races so far.

THE OUTLAWS’ OPEN: The Posse might lead this year’s edition of the rivalry, but it’s the World of Outlaws with National Open bragging rights entering the weekend.

That’s thanks to Carson Macedo and the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 crew. Last year, the Lemoore, CA native passed Anthony Macri and held off a late charge from Sheldon Haudenschild to secure his second win in the crown jewel.

Macedo and the JJR team will look to defend their title this weekend. If they can, Macedo would become the first repeat winner of the event in 20 years. Donny Schatz topped two in a row in 2004-2005. A third National Open title for Macedo would make him the eighth driver in history to win at least a trio.

DOMINANT DONNY: It’s also a World of Outlaws driver that holds the record for the most National Open triumphs, and his name is Donny Schatz.

The 10-time Series champion has claimed Williams Grove’s crown jewel on six occasions (2000, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2012, 2020). He’s been close to adding even more to that total, finishing runner-up four times. The Fargo, ND driver goes for a record-extending seventh crown this weekend.

It’s been an up-and-down few weeks for Schatz as he’s navigated splitting with Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing in August. He drove for Big Game Motorsports and Lunstra Motorsports over the Northern swing before hopping in Kevin Kozlowski’s Works Limited Sprint Car out west. Now, he’s locked down a ride for the remainder of his 29th World of Outlaws campaign.

Schatz climbed aboard a second Sides Motorsports entry over the weekend in Ohio, posting a pair of top 10s in his first two nights aboard the car he’ll complete the season in. The pairing now has Williams Grove up next.

GRAVEL AT THE GROVE: Schatz might have the best résumé, but David Gravel may be the favorite among the current World of Outlaws roster this weekend.

The defending Series champion has been nearly flawless in 2025 as he rolls toward a second consecutive title with Big Game Motorsports. They’ve topped 15 races, earned 51 top fives, and only missed the top 10 twice through 59 races. Gravel’s average finish is a stout 3.51. Entering the weekend, the Watertown, CT native has been on the podium in eight of the last 10 Features.

Williams Grove has been one of Gravel’s best tracks throughout his career. He won the National Open in 2014 with Roth Motorsports and again in 2017 with CJB Motorsports. The 1/2 mile is responsible for nine of his 118 career World of Outlaws victories, which ranks as the most out of the 54 tracks where he’s won.

NEW NATTY O CHAMP?: A few current competitors among The Greatest Show on Dirt give fans reason to believe they could see a new National Open champion arise Saturday.

Sheldon Haudenschild has been in the top five in four of the last five runnings, including a second-place result last year. If 2024’s finale had been one lap longer, the Wooster, OH native may have very well gotten around Macedo for the win. Haudenschild has one Williams Grove trophy in his collection, taking the Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing No. 17 to Victory Lane in 2021.

Logan Schuchart graduated from the PA Posse and is now a 12-year veteran on the World of Outlaws tour who would love to claim his home state’s biggest race. He’s been on the National Open podium three times, finishing third in 2015 and 2020 before improving to runner-up in 2021.

Michael “Buddy” Kofoid and the Roth Motorsports crew have proven they should be favorites anywhere they go this year. They’ve won 11 World of Outlaws races this year and haven’t finished outside the top five in the last 12 races. Kofoid got his first Williams Grove win at last year’s National Open prelim.

POSSE POWER: There’s no race that the PA Posse want more than the National Open, and as always, several talented “Keystone State” locals will be looking to make the home fans proud.

Posse legend Lance Dewease will be looking to make history in the Barry Shearer Racing No. 12. Williams Grove’s winningest driver ever owns five National Open titles, and a sixth would equal him with Schatz for the most. The Fayetteville, PA native beat the All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCoC) at Williams Grove this year, upping his checkered flag total at the 1/2 mile to 116.

Danny Dietrich (Gettysburg, PA) must be considered among the local favorites. He’s already got one National Open triumph on his résumé, taking the Gary Kauffman Racing No. 48 to Williams Grove glory in 2016. Dietrich’s 2025 stat sheet boasts a dozen victories, including a pair at “The Grove.”

York, PA’s Chase Dietz has been banging on the door of a World of Outlaws victory, and what better time than National Open weekend to pull it off. He’s yet to win at Williams Grove this year aboard the Stehman Motorsports No. 23, but he has topped seven 410 races overall in Pennsylvania this year. Last year, Dietz podiumed in the National Open prelim.

Freddie Rahmer will look to join his legendary father, Fred, as a National Open champion. He’s won 19 times in his career at Williams Grove, including one less than two weeks ago.

These four will be joined by several other potent Pennsylvanians, including Troy Wagaman Jr. (Hanover, PA), T.J. Stutts (Liverpool, PA), Brock Zearfoss (Jonestown, PA), Lucas Wolfe (Mechanicsburg, PA), Cameron Smith (Spring Grove, PA), and more.

Unfortunately, an injury will keep Dillsburg, PA’s Anthony Macri on the sidelines this weekend.

KEYSTONE INVASION: The focus isn’t only on the World of Outlaws and Pennsylvania Posse as many capable invaders who don’t fit in either category will roll into the pits this weekend.

2025 Knoxville Nationals champion Ryan Timms intends to make his National Open debut in the Liebig Motorsports No. 10. Timms already topped one of Pennsylvania’s most prestigious races this year, claiming the Tuscarora 50 at Port Royal Speedway. The Oklahoman has made just two previous visits to Williams Grove.

Daryn Pittman occupies a strange space this week in terms of how he’ll be categorized. He calls Oklahoma home, but he’ll pilot one of Pennsylvania’s most iconic cars. The 2013 World of Outlaws champion is again partnered with Kreitz Racing as he chases his first National Open title. Pittman has been so close with six runner-ups, including one two years ago in Kreitz’s No. 69K.

Corey Day has the National Open on his calendar with the Jason Meyers Racing team. It’ll mark the Clovis, CA phenom’s Williams Grove debut. He’s won seven Sprint Car races in 2025 running a limited schedule due to NASCAR obligations.

Giovanni Scelzi plans to be at Williams Grove this weekend. The Mechanicsburg, PA track is where he became the youngest winner in World of Outlaws history in 2018. It’ll mark Scelzi’s eighth National Open attempt but first since joining Clauson Marshall Racing.

POWER COUPLE: Terry Easum, Kacee Frazier Talk Self-Run ASCS Team

 Emily Schwanke

CONCORD, NC (Oct. 2, 2025) — It’s a small, family-run operation at Terry Easum Motorsports.

There are no big-money backers. No team of hired professional crew members. No black book of secrets to racing every dirt track in the country. Just driver Terry Easum, his fiancée and crew chief Kacee Frazier, and the pit area’s favorite four-legged friend Stagger.

Together, they’ve marched through their second full-time season with the American Sprint Car Series, armed with only themselves and the support from their self-run businesses and other local sponsors. Just the way they like it.

“We run two businesses, and honestly, it’s just nice to go racing and run this deal. It’s always something I’ve wanted to do,” Easum said. “I never knew if we could do it or not, but it’s been good. It definitely is a struggle, but the times you do run well, it makes you feel good to know you beat some really good teams.”

“It’s a really good outlet for us to get away from work and just enjoy each other and racing,” Frazier said. “Since we both have the racing background, it’s something we’ve always enjoyed getting to do together.”

The future newlyweds have been at the track together for over a decade, going back to the dawning of their Sprint Car careers with the Oklahoma-based Oil Capital Racing Series (OCRS) in the late 2000s. Both raced with the regional 305 Sprint Car organization until Frazier’s retirement from driving in 2013. Easum continued his career through the rest of the 2010s, and in 2024 decided to make the jump to full-time American Sprint Car Series racing with Frazier on the wrenches.

“To me, it’s really cool,” Easum said. “She definitely puts a lot into it, trying to get the car better and get more speed out of it for Qualifying and stuff like that. It has its goods and bads; we really never turn it off. You go to dinner, and you’re still talking about all that and how to get better. So, it’s good and bad, but it really means a lot that she’s right there by my side helping do it all.”

Frazier, a native of Tulsa, OK, grew up in a motorsports-oriented family and started her own career in the early 2000s at the age of seven, racing Quads on the AMA ATVMX national circuit. Her seven-year riding career encompassed four national championships, nine regional championships and an AMA Rider of the Year nomination before leaving for the Sprint Car world in 2009.

“We’ve just seen way too many friends and family get hurt with really bad injuries,” Frazier said. “My dad had always raced Sprint Cars. My great uncle was Pete Frazier who helped alongside the guys at Factor 1 invent Micro (Sprint) racing. So, my family has always had roll cages around them too, so my dad was like, ‘Hey, let’s get in a Sprint Car and do something a little safer.’”

In her time growing up at the racetrack, Frazier forged a hard-working discipline and a thirst for mechanical knowledge that has driven her to become national 360 Sprint Car racing’s only female crew chief.

“One thing that my dad always made me do was I always had to work on my car,” Frazier said. “It wasn’t like I ever just showed up at the racetrack and it was ready to go. So, I always had a little bit of a background and knew what it took to do it.

“The last two years, I feel like I’ve learned way more about injection systems and fueling the engines and reading spark plugs, and how to get the car balanced better, especially for Terry being such a tall guy.”

Visit the No. 88 in the pit area and you’ll see — she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. From tire prep to making setup changes, Frazier even works to provide feedback to her driver on-track.

“It’s been a big transition going from the 305s to the 360s, just because you feel so much more wing speed, it’s way more important keeping the car loaded and things like that,” Frazier said. “I really feel like the video, like DIRTVision, helps a lot. Even just me — I’ll try to stand on the mule and video the car so when Terry comes in and says, ‘I’m feeling this,’ I can say, ‘Well, this is what it looks like,’ and at that point, we can kind of dissect it and go from there.”

Off the track, Easum and Frazier are full-time business owner/operators of Finish Line Coatings and Premier Self Storage of Broken Arrow during the week, which helps to fund their racing getaways on the weekend.

“We have good customers,” Frazier said. “We have clients who understand. We have some that are racing clients that support us as well. So, they understand if we have to be gone on Fridays — that’s kind of our summer schedule, we don’t really work on Fridays. They understand that, and they’re able to work with us.”

The grind for Easum and Frazier as a locally owned and funded team has been undeniable, tackling a national circuit over the past two years. But it’s one they’re proud to do together, and they’d have it no other way.

“As a kid, I got to go race nationally, and those are some of the best memories that I’ve ever had in my lifetime,” Frazier said. “So, I thought that if we have the opportunity, we should definitely do it. Good, bad, or ugly, we know our backs are up against the wall in a way because Terry didn’t have a whole lot of ASCS experience going into it. Really, if you have the opportunity, you need to go make the memories while you can because it’s really not something everybody gets to do.”

The American Sprint Car Series is back in action, at Salt City Speedway in Hutchinson, KS next Friday–Saturday, Oct. 10–11. Tickets are on sale now; click here to purchase.

If you can’t be there to watch in person, stream every lap live on DIRTVision.

How Honest Abe Roofing Reignited Kevin Newton’s Love For Racing

Through his company, Newton has supported several dirt racing avenues, including this weekend’s Honest Abe Roofing Open Wheel Showdown at Jacksonville Speedway

Emily Schwanke

JACKSONVILLE, IL (October 2, 2025) - Many know Kevin Newton as “Honest Abe” himself, the founder of Honest Abe Roofing, and longtime supporter of Open Wheel racing. But there was about a two-decade period when he stepped away from motorsports.

What brought him back has led to a wave of support for various dirt racing series and events like the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota’s upcoming race at Jacksonville Speedway, Oct. 3-4.

He entered the motorsports world like many, wanting to be a professional race car driver.

When Newton attended middle school in Terre Haute, IN, his friend Gregg Dillon introduced him to the world of motorsports with Quarter Midgets in 1990. When he won in his debut race, Newton knew where he wanted to spend his nights with his family and friends.

“Well, I got introduced to Quarter Midget racing when I was 12 years of age from a friend who raced them,” Newton said. “I had never seen that before, so I stayed the night with the family and watched him and his other brothers race. I didn’t really know about any type of racing up to that point, so I went home the next day and told my dad that we had to get one.

“My father had a business friend who supported racing around the area, and he had an older car that he let me drive, and I won my first race in it with about six cars. It wasn’t much, but that was really the launch of all that.”

Newton continued to work his way up the ladder, moving from Quarter Midgets to Micro Modified Midgets before receiving opportunities in the mid-1990s to run bigger classes of cars until he stuck to racing Midgets and Non-Winged Sprint Cars around the Indiana region.

“I spent about three years doing Quarter Midgets, then we moved into Micro Midgets for about three seasons,” Newton said. “I ran Outlaw (Micro Sprints) in the first year, then moved to the Modified Micro Midget Association, and it was a culture shock with me because I was racing with adults for the first time. It was a learning curve, but we were able to win the title in 1996. Then I got a call in the fall to run a Non-Winged Sprint Car for the Wabash Valley Racing Team, so that was crazy going from a 250CC motorcycle engine to a 410 engine, but it was a lot of fun.

“I got teamed up with George Tucker, who did work with (Jeff) Gordon and (Tony) Stewart when they raced Midgets. He had a little engine shop in Gasoline Alley, so he took me under his wing and showed me the ropes of Midget racing. We went our own ways, then I won the NAMRS Midget Series championship in 1999, and the promoter of the Auto Value Super Sprints Series helped me get a deal to run pavement Sprint Cars in Michigan, and that was when I was like ‘This is racing.’”

While he found early success, it didn’t always translate into a positive trajectory.

“I was always working the whole time I was racing,” Newton said. “I got a call from the Law Brothers to run a USAC Sprint Car, and I was hit or miss. We could qualify well, but I was thickheaded, which I don’t think helped much. I was about 22 at the time, and I had an argument at the Little 500, like one of those you’d get a divorce over. I realized then that I wasn’t ever gonna be a professional race car driver at that point, so I quit and focused on being a top performer in business instead of a top performer in a racecar, ultimately.”

He took a break from the motorsports world and turned his attention to founding Honest Abe Roofing, installing, repairing, and maintaining residential roofs since 2007.

After over 20 years away from a racetrack, Newton’s friend, Gregg, again guided him into the motorsports world, this time to watch his son, Carson Dillon, compete in Winged Sprint Cars. It did not take long for the racing bug to bite Newton again. The lost interest in the sport withered away, and Newton became more involved in supporting various motorsports initiatives.

“I took about 23-24 years off from being in motorsports and really worked on myself,” Newton said. “And once again, back to (Gregg), he came into my office and said ‘Hey, would you be interested in supporting my son racing a 305 Sprint Car?’ and I was like, ‘Sure! You’re son’s old enough to do this?’ So I was totally disconnected from everything from the last 20 years. So, they walked me through it, what it all does, and we got a bunch of the parts for Carson, plus the slight intention of me driving a Sprint Car a few times.

“We bought a spare car, put a 305 in it, raced it a few times, and I think I won in the fifth race out of the gate, then won a couple more races that year. But right away, I got the bug again, so I got Winged Sprint Cars and Midgets built for the following season in 2022.”

Bringing his company into the racing fold, Newton founded 2nd Law Motorsports in 2023 and fielded Sprint Cars and Midgets with multiple drivers, including World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car drivers Cole Macedo, Bill Balog, and Hunter Schuerenberg, USAC Sprint Car competitors Logan Seavey, Kevin Thomas Jr, Brady Bacon and Jake Swanson, plus rising stars in Dillon and Rylan Gray.

“We got it all in one location, and we’ve had a bunch of great drivers and good team members that we had a chance to help or work with, so that was always exciting to see young guys come through and get a chance to see them blossom and grow. I think of Cole Macedo, who’s doing great with the World of Outlaws, and I see him as one of your future superstars. We’ve had guys like Hunter Schuerenberg, Jake Swanson, (Logan) Seavey, Kevin Thomas, Brady Bacon, and some others.”

In February, Honest Abe Roofing joined the World Racing Group family as the official sponsor for every World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Qualifying session and the sponsor for the American Sprint Car Series’ Redraw and Dash races.

In the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series, the Indiana-based company supports every doubleheader weekend with a cookout for drivers and teams after the opening night’s events. The weekend in Jacksonville is a first for Honest Abe Roofing, serving as the title sponsor for an Xtreme program.

Newton said he has seen the impact of Honest Abe Roofing’s involvement in motorsports, which inspires him to continue working to connect fans with his company in multiple ways.

“For me, it was an easy alignment,” Newton said. “I enjoy doing this, I enjoy being a part of it. So, me, I knew I was spending the money one way or the other, so I wondered what it’s going to look like if we could somehow tie racing with business and create some potential payback from bringing cars to the racetrack with the right people, right time, right place, audience, outcome, and make sense of it all.

“We have seen not so much of what is payback, but the exposure and putting investment into the cost acquired to go ahead and be part of separate series, and having your brand in front of people at the tracks has definitely been a positive. We’ve seen multiple race fans that have allowed us to go into their homes and show some roofing solutions. We’ve had the chance to grow our franchise system across the country with new franchisees who were exposed to our brand through motorsports, which is exciting and beneficial.”

Newton made his Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series debut in the 2024 finale. Though he missed the Feature on the first night, he was able to gain the help of Tim Engler and Thomas Meseraull to help get the Honest Abe Roofing No. 16TH Midget into the Feature on the second night in a double-duty weekend with a 410 Sprint Car with the Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) Sprint Cars.

“It’s funny because when you drive a Sprint Car vs. a Midget, you’re looking for all that power,” Newton said. “You expect a lot out of the Midget when you go from the Sprint Car, and none of us knew what the hell we were doing that first night because it was all Sprint Car guys, and I don’t know anything other than roofing. But, we got help from Tim (Engler) and Thomas Meseraull, so we got it rolling good that second night.”

Celebrating the bicentennial year of Jacksonville, IL’s founding, Honest Abe Roofing and the Xtreme Outlaw Midgets have a slate of activities for drivers, teams, and race fans alike to participate in.

After Friday night’s opener at the quarter-mile, food and drinks will be provided as part of the Honest Abe Roofing Cookout. On Saturday morning, the Honest Abe Roofing Pinewood Derby returns for the second year with Box Stock and Super Stock cars participating in the slopedown challenge before the final night of the Honest Abe Roofing Open Wheel Showdown begins.

“Jacksonville has a great community overall,” Newton said. “People think about Illinois, they only think of Chicago, but don’t see the rest of what the state is. It’s what I call the ‘Backbone of America,’ and all of the people doing the hard labor right out of Jacksonville. We do a lot of work in those small areas through Illinois, and just being part of those small towns is always fun and one of my favorite places to visit.

“Kenny (Dobson) does a great job getting fans in the stands. Now, when the Outlaws come to town, it’s a different story because it’s packed times 10. But it’s packed for a local show and it’s just phenomenal. That’s exciting to see that support from people in the community, and to be part of it and in people’s homes is a cool combination and enjoyable for sure.”

The Honest Abe Roofing Open Wheel Showdown at Jacksonville Speedway will take place on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 3-4, marking the final Illinois weekend of the 2025 Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series season.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Penultimate Weekend of Xtreme Outlaw Season On Tap in Honest Abe Roofing Open Wheel Showdown

Joe Grabianowsk

JACKSONVILLE, IL (September 30, 2025) - Only two weekends of racing remain as the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota inches closer toward crowning a champion in November.

The Series makes its fourth annual visit to Jacksonville Speedway for the Honest Abe Roofing Open Wheel Showdown on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 3-4, in a weekend packed with activities on and off the track.

Friday’s opening night begins with the Midgets chasing $4,000-to-win through 25 laps around the 1/4-mile oval. After the checkered flag waves, drivers and crews will be treated to food and drinks at the Honest Abe Roofing Cookout.

Then, the Series finishes out the doubleheader weekend in a battle for 30 laps and a $5,000 payday to cap off the time in the “Land of Lincoln” as the road to the Xtreme Outlaw World Championship presented by Glenn Styres Racing becomes clear in sight.

The Xtreme Outlaw Midgets will be joined by local 410 Sprint Cars and the WFO Winged Micro Series through the two nights to solidify the open-wheeled clash in Illinois.

Here are the top storylines to keep an eye on:

Shattered Ceiling - Jacob Denney has enjoyed an Xtreme Outlaw Midget season that a driver could only dream of, earning double-digit wins (10) for second all-time, 18 top fives in 20 races, and top-10 results in every Feature for a 326-point lead over his closest competition with four races yet to be decided.

The Galloway, OH driver exemplified his prowess behind the wheel of the No. 67 JBL Audio Toyota at Doe Run Raceway and Highland Speedway, leading every Feature lap at the two tracks to earn the Xtreme-POWRi Challenge Series championship. Suppose you only take Denney’s 179 laps led this season, it would put him fifth on the all-time Series laps led list.

Denney’s prior visits to Jacksonville play in his favor, earning his first career Series podium in 2022, then winning his first track Feature with POWRi in 2024. The Honest Abe Roofing Open Wheel Showdown will mark one year since his debut for Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports (KKM).

Fightin’ Illini - The weekend in the Illinois homestead has several natives seeking to defend home turf against the drivers of the Xtreme Outlaw Midgets.

Two of the Illinois faithful expected to lead the charge for their second Series track win in the weekend include Mason City’s Karter Sarff and Pocohontas native Zach Daum. Sarff won the only Series appearance in 2023, and Daum won the doubleheader opener in 2024.

Springfield, IL native Chase McDermand is seeking his first win at Jacksonville, and in the 2025 Xtreme Outlaw season, after leaving the Challenge Series finale at Highland Speedway with a second-place performance.

Among the “Prairie State” natives that will head to West Central Illinois to chase their first Series win are Belleville, IL’s Alex Midkiff, Decatur, IL natives Devin Camfield and David Camfield, Jr., New Berlin, IL veteran Jake Neuman, and Auburn, IL’s Mitchell Davis.

Keep It Honest - Fittingly held in the “Land of Lincoln,” Honest Abe Roofing is boosting the weekend at Jacksonville Speedway with their support for the event and the activities happening around the facility ahead of the weekend.

While the Indiana-based company has provided drivers and teams with the Honest Abe Cookout for every 2025 Xtreme Outlaw doubleheader, Saturday’s Honest Abe Roofing Pinewood Derby returns for fans and race teams to take part in. Between the two classes of Box Stock and Super Stock, a $500 overall purse is distributed to the top three in each, with first place receiving $150, second place earning $75, and third place receiving $25.

Honest Abe Roofing CEO Kevin Newton made his Xtreme Outlaw Midget debut as a competitor in the 2024 finale weekend at Jacksonville. One year later, his company will play a key role in the events to happen on and off the track.

Final Four - The remaining quartet of Xtreme Outlaw Midget races of the 2025 season will highlight a mixed bag of veterans and rookies that look to secure a first-time Feature victory at the end of the season's campaign.

While the Illinois Midget veterans of Daum and McDermand are fighting for their first win of the 2025 season, Series rookies, including Colton Robinson, Michael Faccinto, Alex Karpowicz, Hayden Wise, and Brandon Carr, are all making their first visit to Jacksonville to chase a maiden triumph.

Robinson, the KKM pilot from Titusville, FL, owns the best average finish (8.85) on a 1/4-mile oval of the rookies that haven’t won. Faccinto, the Hanford, CA driver for Trifecta Motorsports, has built up his comfort on the larger tracks with two top fives in the last three Features to improve his average finish to 9.14.
