INDYCAR SERIES

www.indycar.com

The IndyCar Series, officially known as the NTT IndyCar Series for sponsorship reasons, is the highest class of American open-wheel car racing in the United States, which has been conducted under the auspices of various sanctioning bodies since 1920. The series is self-sanctioned by its parent company, IndyCar, LLC, which began in 1996 as the Indy Racing League (IRL) and was created by then Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony George as a competitor to Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). In 2008, the IndyCar Series merged with CART's successor, the Champ Car World Series, unifying the history and statistics of both series (as well as those from their predecessors).

MADISON, Ill. (Saturday, June 6, 2026) – Alex Palou certainly has a flair for the dramatic.

Palou punished the rest of the field Saturday at World Wide Technology Raceway, earning the NTT P1 Award for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline by more than 1 mph as the last of 25 drivers on track. His two-lap average speed on the 1.25-mile oval was 174.353 mph in the No. 10 HRC Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

SEE: Qualifying Results

The superlatives just keep flowing for four-time and reigning NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Palou, who earned his 17th career pole. This was his fifth pole in nine races this season and his fourth consecutive NTT P1 Award in the last month as the Spaniard became the first driver to win four straight poles since all-time INDYCAR SERIES pole king Will Power in 2011.

“The team I have around me is incredible,” Palou said. “My car was on rails today; it was incredible. It’s the place that I’ve struggled the most so far (in my career), so hopefully (this speed) will continue tomorrow."

Palou, who leads the standings by 62 points over Kyle Kirkwood entering this event, was second in morning practice.

“I knew this morning that our car was super quick,” Palou said. “But I did not really expect to get the pole here today, honestly. It’s just incredible. Super proud and can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Live coverage of the 260-lap race starts at 9 p.m. ET Sunday (FOX, FOX One, INDYCAR Radio Network powered by OnlyBulls). Palou’s best career finish here is fourth in 2024, as the asymmetrical oval is the only circuit on the 2026 schedule where Palou has raced in previous seasons without a top-three finish.

David Malukas continued his strong debut season with Team Penske by qualifying second at one of his favorite tracks with a two-lap average of 173.244 in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet.

2025 WWTR winner Kirkwood put himself in strong position to defend his victory, qualifying third at 173.206 in the No. 27 Sam’s Club Honda of Andretti Global. 2026 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Felix Rosenqvist will join Kirkwood on Row 2 after his run of 172.953 in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian Honda.

Scott McLaughlin qualified fifth at 172.869 in the No. 3 DEX Team Penske Chevrolet featuring a throwback livery paying tribute to Helio Castroneves’ 2009 Indy 500 victory for the fabled team. Marcus Armstrong rounds out the third row after qualifying sixth at 172.483 in the No. 66 Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian Honda.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden, who leads all drivers with five victories at this track, will start eighth after his run of 172.415 in the No. 2 Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet.

Palou Prevails Amid Chaos, Varying Tire Strategies in Detroit

DETROIT (Sunday, May 31, 2026) – Four-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Alex Palou prevailed in a full-contact race filled with various tire strategies, winning the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear on Sunday for his fourth victory in eight races this season.

Pole sitter Palou drove his No. 10 HRC Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to a 3.0584-second victory over the No. 27 Sam's Club Honda of Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood. It was the 23rd victory of Palou’s career in 106 starts, a remarkable strike rate of 21.7 percent, and he has won 12 of the last 25 races (48 percent win rate) dating to the start of the 2025 season.

SEE: Race Results

“It feels like the first time, honestly” Palou said. “It was a tough one, a very tough one. But the team did an incredible job once again with the strategy. The pit stops were incredible. Incredible run, incredible start of the year, but it was tough.”

The victory extended Palou’s championship lead to 62 points over Kirkwood, more than a race’s worth of margin. The Spaniard is aiming for an INDYCAR SERIES record-tying fourth straight title.

Graham Rahal finished third in the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, his third podium finish of the season.

Arrow McLaren teammates Pato O'Ward and Christian Lundgaard finished fourth and fifth in the No. 5 and No. 7 Chevrolet-powered cars, respectively, at General Motors’ home event.

Palou led 71 of the 100 laps, but this wasn’t a stroll down Easy Street. He took the lead for good on Lap 69 when Kirkwood pitted from the lead for the last time and stayed out front on restarts on Laps 72, 76, 83 and 93 after full-course yellows bunched the field.

The move to the front was paved a few laps earlier when strategist Barry Wanser and Palou decided to make their final pit stop at the end of Lap 63, switching from the faster but less durable Firestone Firehawk alternate tire to the primary tire. Wanser saw a variety of jousts for position unfolding on the tight, nine-turn, 1.645-mile street circuit and wisely didn’t want Palou to get caught on track under caution and lose track position.

Wanser’s decision proved prescient on Lap 66 when Santino Ferrucci’s No. 14 Homes For Our Troops Chevrolet of AJ Foyt Racing nudged the rear of Rinus VeeKay’s No. 76 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet into a spin in Turn 5. Kirkwood was leading but still had to make his final stop, which he did under yellow on Lap 69 and was forced to use a set of Firestone Firehawk alternates per INDYCAR rules that require at least two sets of the softer rubber to be used in street-circuit events.

Palou rocketed away from Alexander Rossi’s No. 20 Java House Chevrolet of ECR on the restart on Lap 72. Rookie Mick Schumacher and David Malukas were engaged in an intense duel for third on the restart, with Schumacher missing the corner in Turn 5 and nosing into the barriers in his No. 47 ENVE Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Malukas had nowhere to go and ran wide in his No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, with the incident triggering another full-course caution on Lap 73.

By this point, Kirkwood had worked his way back to third after his final pit stop and had to make the most of the added early grip of the alternate tire before the increased durability of Palou’s primary tires prevailed in the closing laps. Kirkwood passed Rossi and then set sail for Palou, knowing this was his best chance to win.

Kirkwood pulled to within two car lengths of Palou on Lap 79 and appeared to be ready to pounce for the lead when Ferrucci’s car slowed in Turn 4 with a mechanical problem, triggering the fifth full-course yellow of the race on Lap 80.

“We took a little bit of a gamble on tires there, being the only guy on reds (alternates) at the end,” Kirkwood said. “It nearly paid off. It was so, so close. There were two untimely yellows.

“We almost covered Palou when we were on primes, which would have been phenomenal, and then we had that other yellow where I had him lined up. I was ready to make a dive on him, and, of course, (the yellow) comes out after I burned 10 seconds of overtake. From there, we just didn’t really have another shot at it. I think I just used up my tires too much to make that one pass.”

Palou kept the lead on the restart on Lap 83, but Kirkwood continued to push and forced Palou into a flat-spotting tire lockup on Lap 88. But Palou gathered himself and his car and started to pull away, building a lead of 1.8929 seconds by Lap 91.

But there was one more restart for Palou to manage after Rossi clipped the rear of the No. 18 BMax Honda driven by Romain Grosjean of Dale Coyne Racing and sent Grosjean into the outside wall approaching Turn 3 on Lap 91. That triggered the last of six full-course yellows, but Palou pulled away from Kirkwood and the field on the Lap 93 restart and was never threatened despite the 173 on-track passes today, a high for a street circuit this season.

“Being able to be up front was key,” Palou said. “On the first stint, I started struggling and kind of put myself in a bad spot and lost two positions with Lundgaard and (Scott) McLaughlin. I lost us positions there, but the team made a great call to be safe with the yellow. It kind of worked out for us.”

The next NTT INDYCAR SERIES race is the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline on Sunday, June 7. Live coverage of the night race starts at 9 p.m. ET on FOX, FOX One and INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls.

DETROIT (Saturday, May 30, 2026) – Alex Palou’s domination of qualifying for recent NTT INDYCAR SERIES races is complete after he captured the NTT P1 Award on Saturday for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.

Palou earned his third consecutive pole position this season and the 16th of his career with a best lap of 1 minute, 1.9017 seconds in the No. 10 HRC Chip Ganassi Racing Honda during the Firestone Fast Six. Palou was fourth in the qualifying order among the six drivers in the single-car, one-lap final session.

SEE: Qualifying Results

It’s the first time in his illustrious career that the four-time and three-time reigning series champion has won three straight poles. Even more impressively, Palou built that streak this month on three different types of circuits – the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course for the Sonsio Grand Prix, the IMS oval for the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge and this nine-turn, 1.645-mile temporary street circuit in the Motor City.

“I felt really good with my lap,” Palou said. “I thought there was not much more margin from my side, so I just tried to put everything together. So happy to make it to the pole, and we stayed there. Good stint, but the big day is tomorrow.”

Series leader Palou will aim for his fourth victory in eight starts this season in the 100-lap race Sunday (12:30 p.m. ET, FOX, FOX One, INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls), an event he won in 2023 when it returned to downtown Detroit after three decades on Belle Isle.

Two-time series champion Will Power produced his best qualifying performance of the season and will start alongside Palou on the front row with his lap of 1:02.1249 in the No. 26 TWG AI Honda of Andretti Global.

Scott McLaughlin was the quickest Chevrolet-powered driver in the manufacturer's home race, qualifying third at 1:02.4559 in the No. 3 Clarience Technologies Team Penske Chevrolet as the first car on track in the Firestone Fast Six.

Six-time series champion Scott Dixon qualified a season-best fourth at 1:02.6085 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to round out the second-row starters.

Christian Lundgaard rallied with an engine change after a malfunction ended his morning practice early, qualifying fifth at 1:02.7870 in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Kyle Kirkwood, who led practice this morning, suffered a big tire lockup and two significant slides during his Firestone Fast Six run and qualified sixth at 1:03.0303 in the No. 27 Sam’s Club Honda of Andretti Global.

A week of heartache continued for David Malukas in qualifying. Malukas crashed heavily in Turn 7 at the end of the first qualifying round in his No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet. Malukas was unhurt but will start last in the 25-car field.

That disappointment came on the heels of Felix Rosenqvist passing Malukas with yards to go to the finish of the 110th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, winning by .0233 of a second – the closest finish in “500” history. Rosenqvist qualified 16th for this event in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian Honda, also eliminated in the first round.

Palou leads second-place Malukas by 37 points in the standings entering the race Sunday but could be poised to expand that gap due to the distance between the two drivers on the starting grid.

“I would not change the position that we have right now, but it’s tough, man,” Palou said. “It’s a crazy race. We know the strategies are going to be moving up and down. So, hopefully we can get a clean start, start working from there and choose our strategies.”

A 30-minute warmup session will precede the race at 9:30 a.m. Sunday (FS1, FOX One, INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls).

Palou Back on Top in Opening Detroit Practice

DETROIT (Friday, May 29, 2026) – Alex Palou sent a reminder to the rest of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES field Friday after the first practice for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear: I’m still here.

Palou entered this race on the streets of downtown Detroit last season on the biggest of highs after sweeping the Month of May at Indianapolis by winning the Sonsio Grand Prix and 109th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge. He won the pole for both races this month but finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the two races.

SEE: Practice Results

But points leader and three-time defending series champion Palou returned to his familiar perch atop the time sheets with a best lap of 1 minute, 2.7722 seconds in the No. 10 HRC Chip Ganassi Racing Honda on the tight, nine-turn, 1.645-mile temporary street circuit. Palou won this race in 2023, the first year it returned to downtown Detroit after 30 years at Belle Isle Park.

“Good start,” Palou said. “It’s just super tough to get a lap here when everything feels good. Although we looked very good, I think we need to work on the car and try to make it a little bit better because I think there was a ton of people that couldn’t really get a good lap.”

Reigning Detroit winner Kyle Kirkwood led two Andretti Global drivers in the top five after a disappointing Indianapolis 500 for the team, ending up second at 1:02.7914 in the No. 27 Sam’s Club Honda. His teammate and three-time Belle Isle winner Will Power was third at 1:02.9433 in the No. 26 TWG AI Honda.

Marcus Armstrong was fourth at 1:03.1743 in the No. 66 Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian Honda. 2021 Belle Isle winner Pato O’Ward rounded out the top five at 1:03.1825 in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.

Felix Rosenqvist, who won the closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history last Sunday, was 11th at 1:03.4064 in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian Honda carrying a special livery featuring the SiriusXM station of legendary Detroit rapper Eminem.

Up next is another practice session at 9 a.m. ET Saturday, followed by NTT P1 Award qualifying at 1 p.m. ET. Both sessions will be broadcast on FS1, FOX One and INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls.

The 100-lap race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET Sunday (FOX, FOX One, INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls).

INDYCAR Officiating Announces Next Phase
in Transparency, Event Reporting
INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, June 4, 2026) – INDYCAR Officiating has announced its next phase in governance separation and process transparency with the launch of official post-event reports, which will include the use of technical penalty guidelines to provide a framework toward consistency across events. As necessary, post-event reports also will include summaries of technical and procedural distinction to increase clarity.

The reporting update is scheduled to begin with this weekend’s NTT INDYCAR SERIES event at World Wide Technology Raceway.

This next step comes after the establishment of INDYCAR Officiating in December 2025. The not-for-profit organization is governed by the three-person Independent Officiating Board (IOB) of chairman Raj Nair, secretary/treasurer Ray Evernham and FIA appointee Ronan Morgan. In April 2026, veteran motorsports officiating and competition executive Scot Elkins was named managing director of officiating to oversee race control, race stewards and technical inspection. Elkins reports directly to the IOB – with no oversight from INDYCAR or Penske Entertainment officials – to provide officiating governance and management.

"One of the takeaways from the initial months of INDYCAR Officiating was a need for thorough infraction communication and, in some cases, comparison to prior rulings to continue our goal of transparency and consistency in rule implementation,” Nair said. “This post-event report will be clear in structure, process, and findings.

“The board would like to thank the entire INDYCAR Officiating team for implementing this important step as we continue our mission. Working across the paddock with key stakeholders, we believe this structure will lead to a very positive result for the sport.”

Post-Event Reports

INDYCAR Officiating post-event reports will summarize the officiating activity from each race event and will include penalties imposed under the NTT INDYCAR SERIES rulebook and findings from technical inspections before and after qualifying and races. Post-event reports will be posted and made public during the week following an event at https://noticeboard.indycarofficiating.org.

Examples of content that will be summarized in the post-event report:

  • Race Recaps
    • In-race penalties imposed – for example, passing under yellow, emergency service in a closed pit or pit lane speed violations
    • Incident reviews referred to the stewards and concluded with no further action
  • Practice Recaps
    • In-practice penalties imposed – for example, pit lane speed violations, causing a yellow or red flag or entering the wrong pit box
  • Technical inspection findings from qualifying and races
    • What was inspected and the extent and subject matter
    • Explanation of any infraction and its resulting penalty-level classification
    • Summary of technical or procedural distinction, where relevant

Technical Penalty Guidelines

To ensure consistency across events, post-event reports will include the classification of technical penalties based on the nature of the infraction via three levels:

  • Infraction Level 1
    • A single-dimensional non-compliance, such as a height or size measurement outside tolerance, typically arising from wear, damage or assembly failure with no finding of altered component location or improper conduct.
  • Infraction Level 2
    • A more significant compliance failure, such as an out-of-tolerance aerodynamic angle, driver or car weight, fuel-system or safety equipment matter, where the configuration is outside specification but does not involve modification of a spec part.
  • Infraction Level 3
    • Modification of a spec part, regardless of which assembly or subsystem it belongs to, or the installation of unapproved or altered components – a departure from the car’s approved specification.

Associated penalties begin with point assessments and fines at Level 1 and rise to disqualification and suspensions at Level 3. Specific monetary fines, point assessments and other consequences imposed within a given infraction level remain at the sole discretion of INDYCAR Officiating.

“We have moved quickly but meticulously in applying this next step in greater officiating transparency,” Elkins said. “Our goals include increased consistency and clarity as these reports look to provide an additional resource toward structure and process. We look forward to implementing this next phase beginning at WWT Raceway.”

Post-event reports for INDY NXT by Firestone events will begin later this summer.

The next race for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is the 10th Annual Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline, round nine of the 2026 championship, Sunday, June 7. Coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One. INDY NXT competes on its first oval track of the 2026 season earlier in the day with coverage of the 75-lap race beginning at 5:30 p.m. on FOX Sports’ FS1.

INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, June 4, 2026) – Kevin Blanch, a longtime and respected member of the INDYCAR technical team and the technical director of INDYCAR Officiating, has announced his retirement.

Nick Allen, who has served as the technical inspection manager for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, has been named technical director for INDYCAR Officiating. Allen was hired in January after 20 years of experience as an INDYCAR race team mechanic and chief mechanic.

Blanch joined INDYCAR in 2003 after serving six-plus seasons with Panther Racing, where he served as the team’s crew chief. During his tenure there, the team won two INDYCAR SERIES championships and earned 11 victories and five pole positions.

With INDYCAR, Blanch – nicknamed “Rocket” – added his experience and expertise as he oversaw the technical inspection process and provided technical oversight and ensured compliance of safety, aerodynamic and chassis regulations.

“I have been contemplating retirement from the INDYCAR technical side for a while,” Blanch said. “Last winter when INDYCAR Officiating was formed, I was asked to continue in my role with an emphasis on completing a very hectic Month of May and the Indianapolis 500 and am glad I did.

“After adding it up, I have been a part of INDYCAR for 36 years and have been involved in 555 straight races. I have simply poured my heart and soul into the sport I love and am very proud of the team I have worked alongside for over two decades. This is a very difficult decision, but I feel like now is the right time to take a step back.”

The respect for Blanch and his work was universal in the INDYCAR paddock. One of his legacies in the garage will be the annual mechanics’ party he organized and hosted after each Indianapolis 500 Pit Stop Challenge. Race team crew members’ names were put into a hat and drawn to win their selection of gifted items from teams, drivers, manufacturers, vendors, suppliers and more. It’s estimated that over the last seven years, over $600,000 of merchandise was donated to hard-working mechanics.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

“I’ve known Kevin for nearly 30 years, dating back to the very first days at Panther Racing in 1997. His passion for INDYCAR and his work ethic are two of his highest qualities. He knows our cars inside and out and has been instrumental in the implementation of many safety and performance measures over the last 20 years.

“His willingness to help INDYCAR Officiating transition through the first half of the 2026 season is another example of his heart for the best for our sport. We are grateful for his leadership, and I’m proud to call him a friend.” – J. Douglas Boles, INDYCAR president

“On behalf of the INDYCAR Officiating Board, I want to thank Kevin ‘Rocket’ Blanch for his many years of dedicated service to INDYCAR and the competitors, teams and fans who make this sport so special.

“Kevin’s professionalism, technical expertise and unwavering commitment to fair and consistent competition have earned the respect of everyone throughout the paddock. His contributions have played an important role in maintaining the integrity of our sport and supporting countless events over the years.

“We are especially grateful that Kevin chose to remain with INDYCAR Officiating from the start of the season through the Month of May, one of the most demanding and important periods of our season. His willingness to support the transition process and work closely with Nick Allen to ensure a seamless handover reflects the professionalism and team-first attitude that have defined his career.

“As Kevin begins this next chapter, we thank him for his service, his dedication and the lasting impact he has made on INDYCAR Officiating. We wish him and his family all the very best in retirement.” – INDYCAR Officiating’s Independent Officiating Board Chairman Raj Nair

NXT SERIES

www.indynxt.com

Indy NXT (pronounced "Indy Next"), previously Indy Lights, is an American developmental automobile racing series sanctioned by IndyCar, currently known as INDY NXT by Firestone for sponsorship reasons. Indy NXT is the highest step on the Road to Indy, a program of racing series leading up to the IndyCar Series.

MADISON, Ill. (Sunday, June 7, 2026) – In a historic drive for the ages, Myles Rowe climbed from 24th and last in the starting field Sunday to win the INDY NXT by Firestone race at World Wide Technology Raceway.

It was the longest climb to victory in the 40-year history of the INDYCAR development series. The previous lowest starting spot for a race winner was 18th, set by Esteban Guerrieri in the 2012 Freedom 100 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.

SEE: Race Results

“It’s a chess game out there,” Rowe said. “Confidence is key in motorsports. The Abel Motorsports Force Indy guys, they really gave me a car today to have that kind of confidence to have a plan and to be able to execute it.

“I’m so thrilled I could give this to them, especially after the disappointment yesterday and having to start from the back. This is no doubt awesome.”

Rowe drove his No. 99 Abel Motorsports with Force Indy machine to his first victory of the season and third career INDY NXT victory – all on ovals – by 2.2081 seconds over rookie Alessandro de Tullio in the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing car.

Josh Pierson finished a season-best third in the No. 29 Starchive Andretti entry, prevailing in a fierce joust for the final podium spot with fellow series veteran Niels Koolen, who ended up a career-best fourth in the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing car, and fifth-place Max Taylor in the No. 28 Susan G. Komen machine of Andretti Global.

Rowe was forced to start last in the 24-car field after he lost his qualifying run Saturday for failure to follow the direction of INDYCAR. Rowe continued on a third flying lap after taking the checkered for his two-lap run, which would have earned him the pole, due to what he said were radio communication problems.

But Rowe wasted little time charging toward the front on the asymmetrical, 1.25-mile oval just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis and its famous Gateway Arch.

He climbed to 10th by Lap 19 of the 75-lap race, using the high line around the track to zoom past rivals on corner exit. Rowe passed Taylor for third with a rare inside move in Turn 1 on Lap 32 and set his sights on pole sitter Lochie Hughes running second in the No. 26 Andretti Global machine and leader Pierson.

On Lap 41, Rowe passed Hughes for second while running in the middle in a breathtaking, three-wide move entering Turn 3. Rowe then zeroed in on leader Pierson, who was one second ahead but starting to navigate lap traffic.

It didn’t take long for Rowe to catch and pass Pierson. On Lap 47, Rowe dove under Pierson exiting Turn 4 for a lead he would not surrender. That was the most noteworthy of 229 on-track passes and 183 passes for position in this thrilling race, series records for this track.

“It’s a balance, an equilibrium,” Rowe said of his strategy. “There are times where I needed to be aggressive and times I really needed to be calculated. I was definitely trying to make sure I managed the right rear (Firestone Firehawk tire) because I knew at the end that was going to be important, just making sure I kept it underneath me so I had something for the end.”

Two caution periods bunched the field in the last 22 laps, with the yellow flying for debris on Lap 54 – which Rowe ran over at speed while leading without any damage to his car – and for a two-car accident on Lap 61 involving veterans Salvador de Alba in the No. 17 HMD Motorsports entry and Yuven Sundaramoorthy in the No. 15 Cusick Morgan Motorsports car. Neither driver was hurt.

Pierson made his last gasp for the lead on Lap 68 after the final restart, looking under Rowe in Turn 1. But he couldn’t complete the pass, and Rowe rocketed away over the closing laps to win comfortably.

The series points lead changed hands again as rookie Nikita Johnson returned to the top after finishing seventh in the No. 21 Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR car. He is two points ahead of previous championship leader and fellow rookie Enzo Fittipaldi, who finished 13th in the No. 67 HMD Motorsports machine. Rookie Tymek Kucharczyk is just five points behind Johnson in third after placing ninth in the No. 71 HMD Motorsports entry.

While not as dramatic as Rowe’s charge, Fittipaldi climbed from 23rd after starting from pit lane due to a mechanical problem. He already forfeited his guaranteed qualifying attempt Saturday due to a mechanical issue while rolling out for qualifying that prevented the No. 67 HMD Motorsports entry from going through pre-qualifying technical inspection.

The next INDY NXT by Firestone race is a doubleheader at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, with a race Saturday, June 20 and another Sunday, June 21.

MADISON, Ill. (Saturday, June 6, 2026) – Lochie Hughes needed this.

Series veteran Hughes earned his third career pole and first this season for the INDY NXT by Firestone at World Wide Technology Raceway on Saturday, turning a two-lap average of 162.578 mph in the No. 26 Andretti Global entry. It was his first pole on an oval track.

SEE: Qualifying Results

Australian Hughes entered the season as the top returnee to the INDYCAR development series after finishing third as a rookie with Andretti Global, with two victories and two poles. But he has struggled in his sophomore season, with a second-place finish at the Indianapolis Grand Prix his sole podium finish. He is fifth in the standings entering this event, 90 points behind leader Enzo Fittipaldi.

“I think I just left the tiniest bit of margin out there, so I was a little bit nervous because I knew probably could have gone a bit quicker. But it was a really good two laps. It’s so easy to overdo it, as well.

“I’m happy. It’s been a rough start to the year. My mind has been a bit like a pretzel, so I’m relieved to have a pole position. Hopefully we can back it up with a win. That’s what we need. But this is nice. It’s some momentum going the right way.”

Live coverage of the 75-lap race on the asymmetrical, 1.25-mile oval – the first oval event of the season for the series – starts at 5:30 p.m. ET Sunday on FS1, FOX One and INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls.

Rookie Alessandro de Tullio continued his strong qualifying performance this season by taking the outside spot on the front row at 162.363 in the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing machine. De Tullio has five poles and two second-place qualifying performances in eight starts this season.

Andretti Global drivers swept the second row to give the team three of the top four qualifying spots. Max Taylor qualified third with his run of 162.212 in the No. 28 Susan G. Komen entry, while Josh Pierson was fourth at 161.676 in the No. 29 Starchive Andretti car.

Rookie Nikita Johnson qualified fifth at 161.652 in the No. 21 Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR car, while fellow rookie Tymek Kucharczyk completed the third row at 161.494 in the No. 71 HMD Motorsports machine.

The race could feature plenty of drama and action due to the series leader and arguably its fastest driver on ovals starting from the back.

Series leader Enzo Fittipaldi forfeited his guaranteed qualifying attempt due to a mechanical problem while rolling out for qualifying that prevented the No. 67 HMD Motorsports entry from going through pre-qualifying technical inspection. He will start 23rd in the 24-car field after leading pre-qualifying practice earlier today.

Myles Rowe, winner of two oval races last season, will start 24th after he lost his qualifying run in the No. 99 Abel Motorsports with Force Indy car for failure to follow the direction of INDYCAR. Rowe continued on a third flying lap after taking the checkered for his two-lap run of 162.560, which would have placed him second on the starting grid Sunday.

“We’ve been having radio issues for a good portion of the season,” Rowe said. “I just didn’t hear the call for the checkered. I’m obviously not trying to do anything to put anybody in danger or anything like that.”

DETROIT (Sunday, May 31, 2026) – Enzo Fittipaldi returned his famous last name to Victory Lane in Detroit for the first time in 35 years, winning the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix despite driving nearly the entire distance with a damaged front wing and nose cone.

Series rookie Fittipaldi won the race, originally scheduled for 45 laps but switched to a timed event, under caution in the No. 67 HMD Motorsports car after starting seventh. It was his second victory of the season and vaulted him to the championship lead in the INDYCAR development series, seven points ahead of Nikita Johnson of Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR and eight ahead of HMD teammate Tymek Kucharczyk.

SEE: Race Results

The victory also was the first by the legendary Fittipaldi name in Detroit since his grandfather and two-time Indy 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi won INDYCAR SERIES races on a different downtown street circuit in the Motor City in 1989 and 1991.

“I just pushed as hard as I could,” Enzo Fittipaldi said. “I found pace. I was really, really fast. Just so happy to get the win. I love to race; I’m a racer.”

Series veteran Myles Rowe finished a season-best second in the No. 99 Abel Motorsports with Force Indy machine, with rookie Kucharczyk rounding out the podium finishers in the No. 71 HMD Motorsports entry.

Rookie Max Garcia tied his season-best finish by placing fourth in the No. 12 Abel Motorsports machine, with veteran Seb Murray rounding out the top five in the No. 27 Megatron car of Andretti Global.

Frenzied action started from the drop of the green flag on Lap 1, as Lochie Hughes made an aggressive move into the Turn 3 hairpin with his No. 26 Andretti Global car, punting pole sitter Alessandro de Tullio into a spin from the lead in the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing entry. Hughes received a drive-through penalty for avoidable contact.

Fittipaldi nudged another car in that chain-reaction melee, which damaged the right side of his front wing and punched a large hole in his nose cone. Kucharczyk took the lead from that point, keeping it on the restart on Lap 8.

Kucharczyk built a lead of 3.324 seconds over Fittipaldi by Lap 13, with Rowe climbing to third by Lap 18. Rowe dove under Fittipaldi for second on Lap 20 and started to chase down Kucharczyk.

By Lap 21, Rowe pulled to within .5477 of a second of leader Kucharcyzk, slicing 1.6 seconds from the Polish driver’s lead in just three laps. But the complexion of the race changed on Lap 26 when the second of four full-course yellow flags in the race were unfurled for debris on the nine-turn, 1.645-mile temporary street circuit.

The restart came at the end of Lap 27, with Rowe trying to dive under Kucharczyk for the lead immediately after the green flag, in the Turn 3 hairpin. But the move forced both cars wide, leaving an opening along the inside curb for Fittipaldi.

He took it, squeezing past Rowe and Kucharcyzk and never trailing thereafter. Fittipaldi stayed out front on another restart on Lap 34 after Niels Koolen nosed his No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing machine into the barrier in Turn 8.

“I got it done,” Fittipaldi said. “I knew Myles was going to go for a lunge there, and I just prepared my mid-(corner) to exit of Turn 3, and he went on the lunge on Tymek, and I was able to do the crossover and got the lead. I had the pace to stay there, and I was actually pulling away.”

The decisive move was one of 141 on-track passes, including 124 for position, in the exciting race – both INDY NXT records for any circuit on which the series has competed in the Motor City.

Fittipaldi expanded that gap to nearly six-tenths of a second when Andretti Global’s Max Taylor also nosed into the barrier in Turn 1 in his No. 28 Susan G. Komen car with about four minutes, 20 seconds left in what had become a timed race, triggering the final caution. Taylor’s car could not be cleared in time to restart the race, with the field finishing under yellow.

“I was losing quite a lot of time through (Turns) 6 and 7,” Fittipaldi said of the damage to his car. “It was quite difficult. Down the straight, I could feel the air coming through my legs and I said: ‘Man, this is not good. We’re definitely dragging a lot on the straight.’ It was hard to keep that lead and keep up with the guys.”

The next INDY NXT by Firestone event is Sunday, June 7 on the 1.25-mile oval at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, in the shadow of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. It’s the first of three oval races this season.

DETROIT (Saturday, May 30, 2026) – Alessandro de Tullio didn’t think he extracted enough from his car during qualifying Saturday for the Detroit Grand Prix, but he still ended up in a familiar position – on pole.

INDY NXT by Firestone rookie de Tullio earned his fifth pole in seven races this season in the INDYCAR development series, taking the top spot with his best lap of 1 minute, 5.3664 seconds in the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing entry. He turned the pole-winning lap while competing in the first group of the two-group session around the nine-turn, 1.645-mile temporary street circuit.

SEE: Qualifying Results

“I think there was more than what I did,” de Tullio said. “I made a few mistakes on my lap. It was just getting better and better each lap. On the last lap, I didn’t really put it together. I’m surprised we’re P1, but still happy to be up there.

“Still pretty good. Just not completely satisfied with my job. I think there was more in it for me, from my side. The team did an amazing job to give me another really fast car.”

The 45-lap race is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET Sunday (FS1, FOX One, INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls). De Tullio will aim for his second victory, as he won from pole in late March in the second race of the doubleheader at Barber Motorsports Park.

Max Taylor rebounded from a hard crash in practice this morning to lead the second qualifying group, and he will start second Sunday after his best lap of 1:05.6050 in the No. 28 Susan G. Komen car of Andretti Global. Taylor led the pre-qualifying practice despite his incident.

Rookie Tymek Kucharczyk will start third after his top lap of 1:05.3713 in the No. 71 HMD Motorsports machine. Kucharczyk earned his first career victory earlier this month in the last event, the second race of the doubleheader on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

JM Correa joins Kucharczyk in the second row after qualifying fourth at 1:05.8840 in the No. 68 Cusick Morgan Motorsports entry.

Lochie Hughes, who led practice Friday, will start fifth after his qualifying run of 1:05.4102 in the No. 26 Andretti Global car. Salvador de Alba qualified sixth at 1:06.0553 in the No. 17 HMD Motorsports machine.

Rookie and series leader Nikita Johnson qualified 10th at 1:06.1661 in the No. 21 Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR entry. Johnson has two victories, the only driver this series with multiple wins. But the gap between Johnson and fourth-place Enzo Fittipaldi of HMD Motorsports is just 16 points in the ultra-competitive action among the series’ best drivers this season.

Hughes Leads Andretti Power Play in Opening Detroit Practice

DETROIT (Friday, May 29, 2026) – Lochie Hughes led four Andretti Global drivers in the top five spots Friday after the opening practice for the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix.

Hughes paced the 45-minute session with a best lap of 1 minute, 7.2741 seconds in the No. 26 Andretti Global machine around the 9-turn, 1.645-mile temporary street circuit.

SEE: Practice Results

Australian Hughes entered this season as the top returning driver for the team that also fielded the championship-winning car of Dennis Hauger in 2025, as Hughes was third in the series standings as a rookie. This season hasn’t started as well, as he is fifth in points with new teammate Max Taylor ahead of him in third.

“Really happy with the balance,” Hughes said. “The track felt a bit weird, especially compared to the first session last year. Just a bit slippery in a few places, which is to be expected.

“Yeah, that was nice. Back where we belong. I kind of so far this year have felt like a chameleon in a bag of Skittles. Just been a bit confused. That was really good, and it’s nice to start a weekend off on the right foot.”

Series veteran and Andretti newcomer Josh Pierson was second at 1:07.3555 in the No. 29 Starchive Andretti car, followed by veteran teammate Seb Murray at 1:07.3832 in the No. 27 Megatron machine as Andretti Global drivers swept the top three spots.

Matteo Nannini was the only non-Andretti driver in the top five, ending up fourth at 1:07.3864 in the No. 20 Enve Motorsports car of Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR. Andretti Global driver Taylor rounded out the top five at 1:07.4789 in the No. 28 Susan G. Komen entry.

Experience paid off on the challenging, tight street circuit, as veterans of the INDYCAR development series filled the top six positions on the time sheet. Series leader and rookie Nikita Johnson ended up 12th at 1:08.1277 in the No. 21 Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR car.

There was one incident involving contact. Rookie Max Garcia hit the concrete barrier at the exit of Turn 1 in the No. 12 Abel Motorsports car, sitting against the wall in a blind corner. The trailing No. 11 Chip Ganassi Racing machine driven by rookie Carson Etter then couldn’t evade Garcia’s stricken car and hit the rear of it. Neither driver was hurt.

Up next is another practice session at 8 a.m. ET Saturday, followed by qualifying at noon ET. Both sessions will be broadcast on FS1, FOX One and INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls.

The 45-lap race is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET Sunday (FS1, FOX One, INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls).

“I think it’s going to change a lot,” Hughes said of the circuit grip levels. “Especially with a two-hour IMSA race tomorrow. Indy cars are rolling out now, too.

“I think practice 2 is going to be very different. Even for us with the temperature. We’re at 8 a.m. in the morning. At 8 a.m. this morning, I was still asleep.”

NDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, June 9, 2026) – INDYCAR Officiating has announced a six-position starting grid penalty in INDY NXT by Firestone for the No. 17 HMD Motorsports entry for avoidable contact involving driver Salvador de Alba during the Sunday, June 7 race at World Wide Technology Raceway. The penalty comes after a post-race review of the Lap 61, Turn 2 incident with the No. 15 entry of Cusick Morgan Motorsports.

De Alba was in violation of:

Rule 9.3.3. Avoidable Contact – The primary responsibility for avoiding contact with a Competitor resides with the overtaking Competitor and the secondary responsibility resides with the Competitor(s) being overtaken. A Competitor who fails to demonstrate their responsibility and initiates a maneuver that results in contact with another Competitor may be penalized.

According to the rulebook, a penalty can be applied at the next INDYCAR race if the penalty cannot be served at the event where the infraction took place.

INDYCAR Officiating applies carryover sporting penalties consistent with an Unapproved Engine Change-Out penalty, which consists of six grid positions on a road and street course and nine grid positions at oval events and will be served at the series’ next event, the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix at Road America Race 1 on Saturday, June 20 at Road America.
