CREEKADEGA CHAOS: Gravel Tops Wild Creek County Debut for Third Straight Win

The Oklahoma bullring meets the hype as Balog, Kofoid, Gravel, and Schuchart all lead before Gravel prevails

tyler carr

SAPULPA, OK (March 21, 2026) - Creek County Speedway was circled on many calendars when the 2026 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series schedule dropped.

The Sapulpa, OK bullring is loved in the region. It’s tight racing. It’s multiple grooves. It’s white knuckles non-stop. Throw the best Sprint Car drivers in the world on “Creekadega,” and it’s bound to deliver. That’s exactly what happened Saturday night.

The Greatest Show on Dirt visited the “Sooner State” oval for the first time, and fans were treated to 40 laps of wildly intense Sprint Car racing. A total of four different drivers led as some of the most elite wheelmen battled it out at the Creekadega 40.

Bill Balog and Logan Schuchart swapped the top spot through the opening circuits. Then it was Michael “Buddy” Kofoid motoring by near the halfway point. Next it was David Gravel’s turn at the top in the second half. Schuchart resurged as race dwindled to less than 10 laps remaining and ripped the fence around Gravel on Lap 33. But the two-time and defending champion didn’t get rattled. He remained committed to the bottom and rolled back by three circuits later. That was all she wrote as Gravel held off a late charge from Kofoid to win the Series debut at Creek County.

“I’ve got to thank my guys Pete (Stephens), Luke (Vaughn), Zach (Patterson), and Cody (Jacobs) for giving me a great race car at a place we’ve never been to before,” Gravel said. “You don’t know how it’s going to go. Not a lot of footage to watch on YouTube or DIRTVision. We qualified good then drew the eight (for the Dash), but we weren’t giving up. We wanted to get a row, and we were able to get fifth, and I was really happy with that because I knew they were going to till the bottom. I felt like we could get to fourth right away and were able to. Really, a couple cautions didn’t go our way. I felt like we were in front of Bill and in front of Logan, and the cautions came out, so I felt like we had to earn that one.”

The night marked Gravel’s third consecutive victory with the World of Outlaws aboard the Big Game Motorsports No. 2, the first time he’s topped three in a row. The Watertown, CT native is now up to 123 career victories, breaking a tie with Danny Lasoski to give him sole possession of sixth all-time.

Buddy Kofoid shook off some recent struggles by claiming the runner-up spot with the Roth Motorsports crew. Donny Schatz made a late run in the CJB Motorsports No. 15 to snag the final spot on the podium.

Spencer Bayston and Logan Schuchart completed the top five.

The Watertown, CT native out duels the home state hero to equal “The Dude” on the all-time win list

tyler carr

LAWTON, OK (March 20, 2026) - The champion is heating up.

After coming close but going winless through the first six races of the 2026 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series season, David Gravel finally broke through last Friday at Kennedale Speedway Park.

This weekend the scene shifted from Texas to Oklahoma, but the result was the same. Lawton Speedway’s Sooner Stampede opened a “Sooner State” weekend for The Greatest Show on Dirt on Friday, and Gravel wheeled the Big Game Motorsports No. 2 to Victory Lane for the second consecutive race.

This time around, the path was paved by not getting the early advantage. Gravel fired off from the pole, but it was second starting Brady Bacon pulling ahead to pace the opening circuit. Gravel stayed steady in the runner-up spot, fending off multiple challenges from Emerson Axsom and Sheldon Haudenschild. Roughly halfway through the race when the preferred line began to shift, Gravel found it before Bacon could and motored by in Turns 3 and 4 to snag the top spot.

That proved to be the winning move as Gravel drove away and made history in the process. The 122nd victory of his World of Outlaws career equaled the 33-year-old with Danny Lasoski for sixth on the all-time win list, a humbling moment for the kid from Watertown, CT that chased his dreams.

“It’s super special,” Gravel said of tying “The Dude.” “I watched Danny win a lot of races. When you win your first race, it’s so cool. Then you win 10 and then 50. It’s just wild, you know? It’s just surreal. Years just fly by. Thankfully I’ve been with a lot of great car owners because without those people I wouldn’t be able to showcase my talent.”

The win combined with some misfortune for Carson Macedo allowed Gravel to extend his advantage atop the points to 38 marks as his pursuit of a three-peat continues.

The second spot belonged to an ecstatic Scott Bogucki. The Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year presented by Five Star contender drove the Three Stooges Racing No. 51 from ninth to runner-up for his first career Series podium.

After leading early, Broken Arrow, OK’s Brady Bacon brought the TKH Motorsports No. 21H home third in front of the home state fans.

Sheldon Haudenschild and Chris Windom completed the top five.

NIGHTLY NOTES

Emerson Axsom clocked his first Race Ready Hottest Lap of the Night in 2026.

TEXAS 2-STEPPIN’: Kennedale Thriller Goes to Gravel After Last Lap Pass

The defending champion gets his first checkered flag of the year by sliding by Balog in the final corner

KENNEDALE, TX (March 13, 2026) - You couldn’t ask for anything more out of Kennedale Speedway Park on Friday night.

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series came to town to kick off the Cowtown Classic, and the Texas bullring was absolutely perfect.

Fans were served 35 laps of some of the finest Sprint Car racing you’ll ever see. The NOS Energy Drink Feature began by Christopher Thram, Bill Balog, and Michael “Buddy” Kofoid slicing and dicing for the top spot over the first three laps. All three of them led at one point during the chaos as they traded sliders and crossovers. Finally, Balog secured control of the lead, but the battles behind him raged on as David Gravel and Carson Macedo joined in on the fun.

As the laps faded, Kofoid surged into second and began to reel in Balog. He pulled the trigger on a Lap 30 slider that got him the lead, but devastation struck on the next circuit as he got into the fence and crashed.

That gifted Balog the lead back, but he had five more laps ahead and a hungry David Gravel behind him. The defending Series champion chipped away at the advantage and finally built a run to throw a slider in the final set of turns. Balog appeared to have a shot to drive around the Big Game Motorsports No. 2’s outside, but he clipped the wall and lost his momentum heading toward the checkered as Gravel stole the win.

“Sometimes it’s better to be running second,” Gravel said. “The bottom was the best place to be in (Turns) 1 and 2, but Buddy started making some hay on the top. I just got my momentum built up. It was way farther around there. I felt like I was getting some runs on him. I think the first two or three laps he hit really good laps on the bottom, and with two to go, he kind of missed it. On the white flag lap, I felt like he started getting free. I wanted to hit the bottom a little better than I did, and I just touched it with my left sides and kind of drove across. I heard him. I know he had to hit the brakes, just going for the win. We’ve run second a bunch of times this year.”

The win gave Gravel 121 in his career with The Greatest Show on Dirt, moving within one of equaling Danny Lasoski for sixth most all time. Kennedale becomes the 56th different track where the two-time champion has won. He’s the sixth different winner through seven races in the 2026 season.

Balog’s runner-up result marked his best finish of the young season. Carson Macedo came home third in the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41, their fifth podium of the year.

Logan Schuchart and Sheldon Haudenschild completed the top five.

HE’S BACK: Donny Schatz Delivers Talladega Masterclass for First Win with CJB

The 10-time champion slices through traffic to end long winless drought

EASTABOGA, AL (March 6, 2026) - Make no mistake about it, Donny Schatz is back.

Last year served up perhaps the most trying time of his career. After battling struggles through the first half of 2025, Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing parted ways in August. Schatz patched together plans to finish his 29th consecutive World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series season, driving for four different teams over the last few months. He went winless for the first time since his rookie year in 1997.

But throughout it all, Schatz made one thing clear: he’s not done. The 10-time champion linked up with CJB Motorsports for his 30th season with The Greatest Show on Dirt. They unloaded with speed at Volusia Speedway Park to open the campaign, but gremlins continued to cause them to start toward the tail of the field.

Then on Friday the scene shifted to Eastaboga, AL’s Talladega Short Track, and Schatz and the CJB crew put together a nearly perfect night. They timed in second quickest in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying. Schatz won his Heat Race and followed that by topping the Toyota Dash. That lined him up on the pole for the 35-lap Feature, and Schatz was just about perfect.

He faced early pressure from Bryce Lucius and Sheldon Haudenschild, but once the leaders got to traffic, the Fargo, ND driver took them to school. Schatz moved all over the track as he put cars between himself and Haudenschild and drove away to one of the most popular wins we’ll see all year.

“I just can’t remember the last one,” Schatz admitted. “It was a long time ago. What can you say? These guys. Chad (Clemens) built this team from the ground up. We didn’t want to do anything to cripple Brenham (Crouch) in any way. These guys worked their tails off this winter. When we went to Volusia, I said, ‘I think if we’re alright, we can win a race there.’ I felt like we were good enough to. We just didn’t get things to go the right way. But, man, Talladega. We just had a solid all night performance. To get back to Victory Lane feels really good. It’s like getting a monkey off your back.”

The triumph was Schatz’s first trip to World of Outlaws Victory Lane in 510 days dating back to Oct. 12, 2024 at Lincoln Speedway. He’d never won at Talladega before, making it the 90th different track that his now 317 career checkered flags are spread across. For CJB, Schatz becomes the sixth different driver to top a World of Outlaws race with the Chad Clemens-owned team, joining David Gravel, Paul McMahan, Spencer Bayston, Fred Rahmer, and Shane Stewart.

Sheldon Haudenschild’s punctuated a strong week for himself and KCP Racing with a runner-up result.

Michael “Buddy” Kofoid bounced back from Monday’s mechanical misfortune with a third place effort.

Bryce Lucius and Garet Williamson completed the top five.

With Carson Macedo finishing seventh and David Gravel in 11th, the two are now knotted atop the standings.

NIGHTLY NOTES:

Cole Macedo clocked the Race//Ready Hottest Lap of the Night.

Sheldon Haudenschild recorded his second straight Simpson Quick Time in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying.

Heat Races belonged to Bill Balog (NOS Energy Drink Heat One), Donny Schatz (DIRTVision Heat Two), and Buddy Kofoid (WIX Filters Heat Three).

The SPA Technique #1 Redraw went to Bryce Lucius.

Donny Schatz topped the Toyota Dash.

Giovanni Scelzi debuted the Spire Motorsports No. 77 Sprint Car and wheeled it from 22nd to 14th to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger.

Carson Macedo was the Tub O’ Towels Seventh Place Finisher.

Ashton Torgerson finished 12th to notch his third consecutive Five Star Bodies Rookie of the Race.

Buddy Kofoid’s 12.933 was enough to grab the ACME Trading Company Fast Lap.

The Smith Titanium Brake Systems Break of the Race went to Cole Macedo.

THE MONTH AHEAD: April Brings Major Midwestern Swing

tyler carr

CONCORD, NC (March 19, 2026) - Springtime is when temperatures rise, flowers bloom, and slide jobs ramp up.

April is on the horizon and ready to bring a major midwestern swing for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

After taking Easter weekend off, The Greatest Show on Dirt will tackle some of the baddest bullrings in the country before finalizing the month at one of the country’s most iconic half miles in preparation for the biggest race of the year.

WATCH EVERY LAP ON DIRTVision

Let’s take a look at what’s ahead in April:

I-55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway Park | Federated Auto Parts Spring Classic (April 10-11): When it comes to Sprint Car racing, it doesn’t get much better than I-55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway Park. The 3/8 mile routinely serves up blistering 10-second laps in Qualifying before slicking off and widening out to produce some of the most thrilling racing fans will ever see.

The tour makes its annual spring visit to the Pevely, MO track with August’s return trip for the grueling Ironman 55 awaiting down the road. Carson Macedo and Logan Schuchart split victories in last year’s Spring Classic.

For tickets and more event information, CLICK HERE.

Jacksonville Speedway | Hy-Vee Perks 40 (April 17): A weekend that’s all about battling it out on bullrings begins with a trip to the “Land of Lincoln.” When the green flag waves at Jacksonville Speedway, you hold your breath. What follows is non-stop, wheel-to-wheel action on an oval that might be generously called a 1/4 mile. The drivers simply can’t escape one another at this Illinois dirt track.

Two years ago, David Gravel and Kyle Larson gave fans the race of the year at Jacksonville as Gravel prevailed. Last season, Larson wouldn’t be denied as he wheeled from sixth to victory. The tour will make a stop at Jacksonville for the third consecutive year.

For tickets and more event information, CLICK HERE.

Tri-State Speedway | Southern Indiana Showdown (April 18): After Jacksonville, the weekend is punctuated with a “Hoosier State” staple. The World of Outlaws has visited no track in Indiana more than Haubstadt’s Tri-State Speedway, and that record will grow on April 18.

Sheldon Haudenschild finally conquered Tri-State last year after several close calls. Brady Bacon bagged the two previous visits. Among the current crop of full-timers, Carson Macedo owns the most wins at the 1/4 mile with a trio of triumphs.

With “The Class Track” being a regular stop on the USAC National Sprint Car tour, this race routinely attracts some of the nation’s best Non-wing Sprint Car drivers. With USAC’s premier divisions silent that weekend, expect no different in 2026.

For tickets and more event information, CLICK HERE.

Knoxville Raceway | Premier Chevy Dealers Clash (April 24-25): No track appears more on the 2026 World of Outlaws schedule than the famed Knoxville Raceway, and the first two of nine scheduled visits will close out April’s slate. The tour heads to the “Sprint Car Capital of the World” for the first leg of the Premier Chevy Dealers Clash.

The Series also travels to Knoxville on May 23 for the Stars and Stripes Salute, June 12-13 for the second leg of the Premier Chevy Dealers Clash, and, of course, on Aug. 12-15 for the 65th running of the NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s.

Rico Abreu topped last year’s April visit to Knoxville.

TOP FIVE STORYLINES: Lawton Return, Creek County Debut Set Stage for Oklahoma Weekend

LAWTON, OK (March 17, 2026) - The rich tradition of Sprint Car racing in Oklahoma will continue to grow this week.

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series is aimed at the “Sooner State” for a full weekend of action.

First up, the tour makes a trip to Lawton Speedway on Friday, March 20. The southern Oklahoma oval was the 19th track to ever host The Greatest Show on Dirt during its inaugural season in 1978. Since then, the Series has made 10 more Lawton stops. Friday will make it a dozen total.

After Lawton, it’s Tulsa time – sort of. Just to the southwest of the city that’s home to the Chili Bowl Nationals is Sapulpa, OK’s Creek County Speedway. The World of Outlaws has never visited “Creekadega,” but that’s set to change on Saturday, March 21, when Creek County becomes the ninth Oklahoma track to host the country’s best Sprint Car drivers.

Let’s look at the top stories to watch in Oklahoma:

2 BACK ON TOP

It didn’t take long for David Gravel to regain control of the top spot in the standings.

After Carson Macedo and the Jason Johnson Racing crew equaled Gravel heading into Kennedale, the Big Game Motorsports team promptly responded by winning their first race of the year. That pushed them six points clear at the top as they chase a third consecutive championship. Gravel has finished on the podium in five of the last six races this year.

The Watertown, CT native’s experience at the Oklahoma tracks ahead is limited. He’s been to Lawton on three occasions and come home in the top five each time, peaking at third in 2020 during his Jason Johnson Racing days. Like several of the current full-time drivers, Gravel will make his Creek County debut on Saturday.

LOVING LAWTON

A couple of the current competitors on the World of Outlaws tour have found their way to Victory Lane at Lawton and will aim for a return trip on Friday.

Carson Macedo topped the 2021 trip to Lawton aboard the JJR No. 41. The Lemoore, CA native followed that with a runner-up a year ago. He’s off to a stout start in 2026 with a 3.57 average finish through seven races and trails Gravel by just six markers in the early title chase.

Last year’s visit belonged to Michael “Buddy” Kofoid as he got his first look at Lawton. That gave Roth Motorsports wins in two of the last three Lawton races as Daryn Pittman took the No. 83 to Victory Lane at his home state track in 2020. Kofoid is in major need of a rebound this weekend after a crash while leading Kennedale on Friday dropped the championship contender to sixth in points.

A CRACK AT CREEKADEGA

Saturday might be the World of Outlaws debut at Creek County, but a handful of the current band of travelers had their paths lead them to “Creekadega” in the past.

Scott Bogucki’s days of touring with the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) brought him to Creek County on four occasions. The highlight of those was a fourth-place effort in 2018. The Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year presented by Five Star Bodies contender will return for the first time in seven years.

Garet Williamson’s experience is similar with ASCS bringing him to Creek County multiple times. He raced there once apiece in 2019, 2020, and 2021 and will head back aboard the Fischer Motorsports No. 23.

Ashton Torgerson’s time in Micro Sprints allowed him to rack up Creek County laps. The Glendale, AZ native was a 2022 runner-up there in Winged A-class. He also drove a Keith Kunz Motorsports Midget at the 1/4 mile two years ago, finishing fourth. Torgerson currently leads the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year presented by Five Star Bodies chase.

Emerson Axsom made a pair of POWRi Midget appearances in 2020. The result was two top 10s highlighted by a fifth. Axsom is fresh off his best finish of the season in the Klaasmeyer/Petry Motorsports No. 27, eighth at Kennedale.

You’ve got to go back a bit, but Chris Windom circled Creek County a couple times. The Sides Motorsports pilot raced a Non-wing Sprint Car there in 2007 and 2008. His top effort was fifth in his debut.

RIGHTING THE SHIP

Hopes were high for Bill Balog entering his third season with The Greatest Show on Dirt, but it didn’t quite start the way he would’ve liked.

The “North Pole Nightmare” struggled through the opening five nights at Volusia, only managing a best finish of 12th. But since the schedule shifted to some short tracks, Balog is starting to resemble what we saw last year. The No. 17B made the Toyota Dash and came home sixth at Talladega. Balog backed that up by nearly winning at Kennedale, coming up just a corner short as David Gravel forced him to settle for second. On the bright side, it marked his first podium of 2026.

Balog will carry the momentum into Oklahoma this weekend. His Lawton debut a year ago led to a front row starting spot and seventh-place result. He’ll make his first laps at Creek County on Saturday.

ASCS INVASION

Oklahoma is the heart of ASCS country, so many of the nation’s top 360 drivers are planning to add 50 cubic inches between the frame rails and battle the best of the best in familiar territory.

Six-time and defending ASCS champion leads the charge. The Sunnyvale, TX native owns four Lawton checkered flags. His win tally at Creek County reaches double digits as he’s won there with ASCS both nationally and regionally and even picked up a 410 score with POWRi.

Glenpool, OK’s Matt Covington will proudly represent both ASCS and the home state. He’s got plenty of experience at both tracks, including a pair of Lawton victories and one at Creek County to go along with 10 more podiums.

Seth Bergman is originally from the state of Washington, but he’s a “Sooner” these days. The 2024 ASCS titlist has been close to victory at Lawton, including a 2012 runner-up. He’s bagged a dozen ASCS Sooner Region trophies at Creek County.

Blake Hahn may not be currently on tour with ASCS, but he’s a two-time champion and 25-time Feature winner of the Series. Saturday’s race is especially meaningful to Hahn as Creek County is the Sapulpa, OK native’s home track. His résumé shows countless laps at the bullring and victories in Winged Sprint Cars, Non-Wing Sprint Cars, and Midgets.

Both tracks are expected to attract nearly 40 entrants with plenty more Midwestern talent with ASCS ties planning to compete, including the likes of Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, OK), Ryder Laplante (Calera, OK), Austyn Gossel (Fort Collins, CO), Landon Crawley (Benton, AR), and more.

Torgerson Proving He Belongs Among the Best with Shark Racing

TYLER CARR

EASTABOGA, AL (March 5, 2026) - Ashton Torgerson stood on the frontstretch of Volusia Speedway Park on Monday night sounding like he’d been there before.

But the reality is, he hadn’t. The 19-year-old had just secured his first career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series podium with an impressive drive from sixth to second. Some of the names he passed to get there? A few of the sport’s best like David Gravel, Carson Macedo, and Sheldon Haudenschild.

Still, the 19-year-old acted as if it was another day on the job, hands stoically clasped behind his back while giving what seems as if it may be the first of many top three interviews.

Eyebrows were raised last April when Shark Racing announced they were bringing Torgerson aboard. Could this relatively unproven teenager hold his own in the Sprint Car hotbed of Pennsylvania? He quickly silenced critics with many impressive results including a win at BAPS Motor Speedway and top 10 in Eldora Speedway’s Kings Royal. And now the driver that’s mature beyond his years is already showing he belongs with The Greatest Show on Dirt.

Monday’s result isn’t the only proof. That was just one of the trio of top 10s he collected during the season’s first five races at Volusia. He also set Simpson Quick Time on the first night of the campaign. It’s clear the consistency is there, and the Bike Week Jamboree finale made it clear this kid is going to contend for wins.

“I was pretty good there early on, sat there around fifth or sixth,” Torgerson explained. “Then I really figured out the track, and the car came to me a little bit better. There at the end, I don’t know if I really could’ve done anything different to get the lead but hats off to Macri. He was quick, but I definitely feel like I had something for him.”

This is an opportunity Torgerson doesn’t intend to squander. Bobby and Jacob Allen saw something in him that many didn’t. He doesn’t want to let them down. He’s honoring “Scruffy” every time he hits the track.

The early standings for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year presented by Five Star Bodies already show Torgerson with a 40-point advantage over his closest competitor, Scotty Thiel. There’s a long way to go, but all those who questioned Torgerson receiving this chance are much quieter these days.

“It’s surreal to have this crew behind me and believe in me,” Torgerson said. “It’s a rookie season with the Outlaws, so it’s going to be a lot of ups and downs. This is definitely one of the ups. I can’t thank my crew enough. They work their tails off for me.”

Torgerson’s rookie season rolls into Eastaboga, AL’s Talladega Short Track on Friday, March 6 and Columbus, MS’ Magnolia Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 7. For tickets, CLICK HERE.

TOP FIVE STORYLINES: Dirty South Doubleheader Takes World of Outlaws to Talladega, Magnolia

TYLER CARR

EASTABOGA, AL (March 4, 2026) - The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series is ready for some southern hospitality.

After a Bike Week invasion of Florida, it’s a quick turnaround for The Greatest Show on Dirt as the tour makes its only stops of 2026 in Alabama and Mississippi this week.

First up is the Series’ 14th ever visit to Eastaboga, AL’s Talladega Short Track on Friday, March 6. The bullring sits just down the street from its pavement counterpart, the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway. Then it’s over to Columbus, MS’ Magnolia Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 7. “The Mag” has welcomed the country’s premier Sprint Car drivers on three previous occasions.

Thanks to AMKUS Rescue Systems, both races will be First Responder Nights. First responders will receive a $10 discount on their tickets and can get 20% off at the World of Outlaws merch trailer by showing their ID at the gates on race day.

It’s time to get dirty in the “Dirty South.”

Let’s look at the top five storylines to watch unfold down south:

BACK WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

David Gravel has racked up a remarkable 120 World of Outlaws victories in his illustrious career, and he gets to head to where the winning began this weekend.

Rewind to October of 2011 when the World of Outlaws rolled into Talladega Short Track. Jason Meyers was riding a five-race win streak and powering toward his second consecutive championship. But his streak came to a halt when a 19-year-old from Watertown, CT wheeled by him and held off Donny Schatz for his first career checkered flag.

Now, Gravel returns to Talladega as the two-time and defending champion and seventh-winningest driver in Series history. He’s been to the Alabama oval twice since that night, finishing fourth in 2023 and runner-up a year ago with Big Game Motorsports.

Looking ahead to Saturday, Gravel has also been to Magnolia Victory Lane, topping last year’s visit.

Gravel currently leads the points and carries a run of four straight podiums into the weekend.

ICE IN HIS VEINS

The man who made Gravel settle for second last year at Talladega? That would be Bill Balog.

The “North Pole Nightmare” drove with ice in his veins around the 1/3 mile. Balog wheeled from fourth to the lead in his second-ever appearance at the track. The job wasn’t done there as he had to hold off a charging Gravel, but he managed to pull it off. His first World of Outlaws win since 2016 ignited a memorable campaign. He went on to top a trio of races and improve his statistics nearly across the board compared to his 2024 rookie season.

Balog could use a stout showing this weekend to shake off a slow start. He battled gremlins throughout Florida and is yet to crack the top 10 this season through five races.

CAN BUDDY BOUNCE BACK?

The season is still young, but Michael “Buddy” Kofoid needs a strong weekend.

If something could go wrong on Monday at Volusia Speedway Park for the championship contender, it did. Heat Race and Last Chance Showdown problems forced the Roth Motorsports crew to use a provisional. Then, after swapping cars for the Feature, the No. 83 wouldn’t fire for the main event. The resulting 27th-place finish dropped Kofoid to fourth in the standings and 46 markers behind point leader Gravel.

Fortunately for the 24-year-old, he’s heading into a stretch of tracks that have treated him well. He won at Talladega two years ago with CMS Racing. The Penngrove, CA native marched from ninth to fourth last year at Magnolia. Looking a little further ahead, Kofoid has been victorious at Kennedale Speedway Park, where the tour visits on March 13-14, and Lawton Speedway, which is the March 20 destination.

There’s no denying this is the scenario that Kofoid and company hoped to avoid, but with more than 80 races to go and this team proving they can get hot, their title hopes are far from over.

HAUD’S HEATING UP

It hasn’t taken long for the new pairing of Sheldon Haudenschild and KCP Racing to find their footing.

They didn’t get off to the quickest start at the season-opening Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals, but the Bike Week Jamboree return to Volusia shows an entirely different story. Haudenschild dominated Sunday’s portion by leading every lap for the 47th World of Outlaws triumph of his career. He backed that up by starting on the pole and bagging a top 10 the next night.

Can the Wooster, OH native continue building momentum this weekend? The statistics nearly guarantee he’ll be up front at Magnolia on Saturday. Haudenschild topped the Series debut at the Mississippi track in 2021. He then finished third in both 2023 and 2025 to be the only driver to stand on the podium during all three World of Outlaws visits.

ROOKIE ON A ROLL

Many viewed Emerson Axsom as the immediate favorite for the 2026 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year presented by Five Star Bodies when he and Klaasmeyer/Petry Motorsports committed, but Ashton Torgerson has other plans.

The Glendale, AZ native was wildly impressive over the campaign’s first five races at Volusia with Shark Racing. It began with him setting Simpson Race Products Quick Time in the season opener and finishing the night with a top 10. During the Bike Week Jamboree, he finished seventh on Sunday then wheeled from sixth to second in the finale. Had the race been a lap or two longer, he might’ve been able to sneak by Anthony Macri for his first career World of Outlaws win.

Many new experiences await the 19-year-old in the near future. Of the seven tracks remaining in March, he’s raced at none of them in a Sprint Car. He does have some Midget laps at Creek County Speedway (March 21), US 36 Raceway (March 27), and 81 Speedway (March 28) under his belt that he hopes will help during those stops.

Cole Schroeder Commits to Rookie Campaign with American Sprint Car Series

Emily Schwanke

CONCORD, NC (March 6, 2026) — A new face to the American Sprint Car Series has entered the chase for BRODIX Rookie of the Year honors.

Cole Schroeder has made his commitment to following the entire national 360 Sprint Car schedule in 2026 behind the wheel of the Rocking R Bar, Moyle Racing Engines-powered Maxim Chassis No. 3. The 20-year-old native of Bozeman, MT, made his debut with the Series at Volusia Speedway Park in January and is ready to take on the full slate of events with his family-owned operation.

“It’s good competition to get the laps with, experience, and time back on the road,” Schroeder said. “It’s a great series and great people to follow.”

Originally from “Big Sky Country,” Schroeder moved to Arizona in 2018 and began his racing career in the asphalt karting ranks before jumping into Micro Sprints in 2021. It wasn’t long before he became a certified dealer of Hyper Racing chassis in the fall of 2024, assembling the Micro Sprint machines for buyers around the region.

Among his most notable Feature wins in the Micro Sprint ranks came in the 2023 Deuces Wild Shootout at U.S. 24 Speedway, where Schroeder topped a field of 98 Winged A-Class entrants and led every lap of the main event enroute to collect the $12,222.22 grand prize.

During the 2025 season, Schroeder moved to his current home in Fresno, CA, and became a regular of the 360 Sprint Car scene on the West Coast, recording multiple starts at tracks including Watsonville Speedway, Placerville Speedway, Silver Dollar Speedway and Thunderbowl Raceway.

“I like the smaller tracks; I feel like it kinda brings a little more driver into it,” Schroeder said. “They’re a little more evil, and it’s a lot closer racing.”

For 2026, Schroeder will take on a national Sprint Car series schedule for the first time in his career — a venture he knows will be challenging at first but a necessary one in his efforts to make a climb up the open-wheel racing ladder.

“For now, it’s just to run everything we can,” Schroeder said. “Obviously, our 360 program is pretty built up, so we’ll run that. Then, next year, we’ll hopefully move up to 410s and start getting more experience in those.”

The American Sprint Car Series returns to action on Saturday, April 11, at Salina Highbanks Speedway in a clash with the ASCS Sooner Region. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the track on race day.

If you can’t be at the track, how can you watch the American Sprint Car Series in 2026? Every event is broadcast live on DIRTVision.
