Shake Up in SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series Standings Heading Into First Wingless Race at Barona Speedway

Missy Benker

The SoCal Lightning Sprint Cars will return to their home track, Barona Speedway, for the first wingless race of the season this Saturday night, June 20. Since the series’ last race on May 24, there has been a massive shakeup in the championship standings, with Ramona’s David Taft emerging as the new point leader. Only one driver in the top 10 remains in the same position as before the last two races

Taft, who won the second race of the year at Imperial Valley Raceway in March, finished second in the series’ most recent race four weeks ago. After finishing eighth in the season opener, Taft has not finished worse than second in the past four races. That consistency propelled him into the championship lead, where he currently holds a 38-point advantage over Warner Springs star “Shugah” Shane Sexton. The first two SCLS champions, Ryan Dumas of San Diego and Alpine’s Peter Benker, are currently tied for third. Cody Benker, Peter’s teenage son, sits fifth.

Three-time lightning sprint car champion Brent Sexton of Lakeside, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Dyer of Yucca Valley, Alpine’s Tyler Warner, San Diego’s Parker Dumas, and Kelly Weitzel of El Cajon round out the top 10. Weitzel is the only driver who remains in the same position she occupied before the Memorial Day weekend doubleheader.

Dyer, who won the season opener at Imperial Valley and led the championship standings heading into the Race for Heroes doubleheader at Barona, endured a disastrous weekend.  On the first night, an oil cooler line came off. On night two, he lost an engine. The back-to-back issues sent the California Highway Patrol Officer into a free fall to seventh place in the series standings.

Through the first five races of the season, the SCLS has produced five different winners. In addition to Taft and Dyer, Michael Tobiason, Ryan Dumas, and Parker Dumas have all visited victory circle in 2026.

Last season, the SCLS contested three wingless races at Barona. Dyer, Ryan Dumas, and Warner scored the victories.

After Saturday’s race, the SCLS will begin a six-week summer break before returning to Barona on August 1. Once back in action, the club will stay busy with six races in eight weeks, including its first-ever appearance at Perris Auto Speedway on August 29.

In addition to the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series, fans will also see the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Hobby Stocks, Dwarf Cars, Pony Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Kids Classes in action.

WINGED SPRINT CARS RETURN TO ORLANDO SPEED WORLD SEPTEMBER 19

June 17, 2026 – Lakeland, Florida - The BG Products Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series today announced that the series will visit Orlando Speed World for the first time in series history September 19, 2026 as part of the Hell on Wheels Full Throttle events. It will be the first time winged sprint cars have competed on the 3/8-mile, semi-banked asphalt oval since 2013.
The now defunct Tampa Bay Area Racing Association (TBARA) competed at Orlando Speed World on Saturday December 7, 2013. Tommy Nichols was victorious in that final winged sprint car race at the facility.
The Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series will officially ring in the new era of winged sprint car racing at the historic facility that is in Bithlo, Florida On September 19. The speedway first opened in 1974 and has a rich history of hosting winged pavement sprint car events, most notably with TBARA.
Due to a nearly 13-year absence hosting sprint car events at Orlando Speed World, many drivers will get their first look at the facility. Until this past May 23, 2026, the facility has sat idle for over a decade.
Veteran series drivers Sport Allen, Jim Childers, Larry Brazil Jr., and Mickey Kempgens have competed at the facility in the past.
These veterans will be joined by a handful of drivers who have never competed in winged sprint cars at the track. Among them are series point leader Colton Bettis, Tyler Porter, Jerry Paquin, Bruce Brantley, and Steven Hollinger among others.
It is expected that this event could lure northern drivers down for the weekend to compete due to the popularity of Orlando Speed World and the absence of sprint car racing at the track.
The timing of this event puts the battle for the season championship in the thick of things. After this event, there will still be at least three points races left on the 2026 schedule.

STRONG EXHIBITOR DEMAND FUELS MOMENTUM FOR THE 2026 PRI SHOW
-- Booth space selection reflects continued investment across the racing industry --

INDIANAPOLIS (June 10, 2026) — Momentum across the global racing industry continues to build toward the 2026 Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Show, scheduled for December 10-12, 2026, at Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium, as exhibitors complete booth space selection and secure placement across the show floor.

Following priority booth selection, more than 920 exhibitors have committed over 360,000 net square feet of exhibit space across every major segment of the racing industry. The strong early participation underscores continued confidence in the PRI Show as the premier business event for motorsports professionals and companies worldwide.

“The strength of this year’s booth selection process reflects the overall health and direction of the racing industry,” said PRI Managing Director Doug Bresnahan. “Companies continue to invest in PRI because this is where the industry comes together to launch products, connect with customers, and move business forward.”

The PRI Show brings together the full breadth of the racing ecosystem, including engine builders, chassis manufacturers, performance parts companies, distributors, fabrication specialists, and service providers. This diversity across the show floor continues to reflect a global industry that is actively innovating and investing in new technologies, competitive advantage, and business expansion.

Returning exhibitors have secured priority placement to maintain or expand their footprint, while new companies joining the show underscore continued growth and opportunity across the racing marketplace. Collectively, these commitments reinforce strong confidence in the PRI Show as the central meeting point for the motorsports industry.

A SHOW FLOOR BUILT FOR BUSINESS CONNECTIONS
The PRI Show serves as a critical business hub for the global racing industry, where product launches, purchasing decisions, and partnership development take place under one roof. Exhibitors and attendees rely on the show floor to identify new technologies, build supplier relationships, and connect directly with decision-makers shaping the future of motorsports.

“The PRI Show is where the racing industry comes to do business at scale,” said PRI Show Director Karin Davidson. “From discovering new products to strengthening long-term partnerships, the show floor is designed to maximize meaningful connections and drive real business outcomes for exhibitors and attendees alike.”

New for the 2026 PRI Show, the Motorsports Engineering Symposium will bring together engineers, designers, and technical leaders from across the racing industry for a focused program dedicated to advancing performance, innovation, and applied engineering in motorsports. The symposium will provide a forum for sharing technical knowledge, exploring emerging technologies, and highlighting the engineering breakthroughs shaping the future of racing.

Attendee registration opens in July. To register and book hotel accommodations, and learn more about the 2026 PRI Show, visit PRI2026.com/Attend.
