Two in a Row for Schatz at Princeton: Earns 15th Win of 2008

Princeton, MN— October 4, 2008—With the success that Donny Schatz has had at Princeton Speedway, it’s hard to believe that the first time he competed at the high-banked ¼-mile located in Minnesota was in 2004, when the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series made their debut at the track. After all, the two-time defending World of Outlaws champion cut his teeth racing in the Upper Midwest, including at a number of tracks in the state of Minnesota, where he now has nine victories.

A dominating performance on Saturday night in the PolyDome Princeton National that saw him lead all 40 laps, earned Schatz his second consecutive victory at the track, becoming the first driver to claim two A-Feature wins at the high-banked bullring with the series. Schatz’s 15th A-Feature win of the season was worth $10,000 and was the 85th of his career with the World of Outlaws, as he closes in on his third consecutive series title.

“Princeton has been good to me,” he said after the win. “We’ve had a lot of fun here. I’m glad to get to Victory Lane again. It’s always good. These guys have definitely worked hard. They eat, sleep, breath and drink this race team and this race car. They definitely deserved it. They have been busting their tails.”

Schatz lined up second and beat pole sitter Sam Hafertepe Jr. into the first turn using the high side of the track to take the lead. He quickly pulled away and a lap four caution came just before he was going to enter lapped traffic. On the restart, he again charged to a comfortable lead and four laps later he was in traffic. Schatz sliced his way through traffic, extending his lead as he weaved his way through the slower machines, while the rest of the front runner lost ground in lapped traffic.

“That was one bad piece there in traffic,” he said with a smile as he pointed to his car. “It could run the top, the middle and the bottom at the same speed. That’s what its Achilles heel was. It’s good to have that and that is how my cars always are. Ricky (Warner) keeps tuning these things and fine tuning little things and finding things to make it better. We’re in test mode for next year and it’s good to get a win in test mode.”

Just as Schatz was about to take the white flag in the Armor All J&J, the final caution of the night flew, setting up a two-lap shootout for the win, as Terry McCarl and Jac Haudenschild lined up behind him. On the restart, Schatz easily pulled away en route to winning by nearly two seconds.

“I just had to do my job and not worry about who was back there and what they are going to do,” shared the winner of his plan on the final restart. “I made a wing adjustment on the last yellow and maybe should have made one a little earlier. We were good. We just had to keep the tires underneath us and keep the speed up.”

With the win, Schatz extended his lead in the World of Outlaws championship standings to 123 points over Jason Meyers with seven events remaining on the 2008 schedule. Schatz leads the series with 54 Top-10 finishes in the 57 A-Feature events that have been contested this season.

“We’re trying to win a championship here, but we are also testing for next year,” explained the North Dakota native. “We’re doing some different things, package-wise. Maybe that is something that has hurt us in the last couple of weeks and maybe it’s what helped us win here tonight. That’s all part of the game. We’re finishing this year, but also looking ahead to next year. That’s the fun part.”

Terry McCarl, who won his first race of the season on September 24 at Orange County Fair Speedway in New York, finished second on Saturday night in the Big Game Treestands Maxim to pick up his third consecutive Top-Five finish and seventh consecutive Top-10. He started fourth and charged around both Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Tony Bruce Jr. in turns one and two on the opening lap.

“You never like to finish second, but we have been getting very consistent with our runs and that’s the key to racing a 100 nights a year out here,” noted McCarl. “Our team is really coming together. I can’t say enough about how hard they have been working. I’m excited. We’re getting better and better and my confidence is growing each night.”

McCarl lined up right behind Schatz on the final restart and had his hands full with a hard charging Jac Haudenschild behind him, who was using the high line as the pair battled for the second spot. McCarl fended off Haudenschild’s challenge to earn his four career Top-10 finish at Princeton Speedway.

“I couldn’t do much in (turns) one and two,” he stated. “I was just too loose in one and two from the word go. We were really good in three and four. You needed to move up, especially in traffic. I didn’t have a whole lot for him unless he made a mistake and Donny doesn’t make too many mistakes. On the second to last yellow we stayed with him really good.”

McCarl, who has been one of the most consistent drivers over the last three weeks with the World of Outlaws, is excited for the final seven races of this season and is already gearing up for next season. Since Tod Quiring assumed ownership of McCarl’s team, the six-time Knoxville Raceway and Huset’s Speedway track champion has been in contention for a number of wins.

“Tod and Lisa Quiring my car owners were here this weekend, so it’s great to run good in front of them,” McCarl said. “Tod is such a great organizer. Now that he has taken over, I can’t be happier. I look for bigger and better things for the rest of the season.”

Jac Haudenschild used the high side of the track for a majority of the race to charge from the eighth starting spot to finish third in the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim. He had a spirited battled late in the race with 2001 World of Outlaws champion Danny Lasoski, trading the third spot with him a number of times. He began the night by setting fast time in qualifying for the third time this season.

“The car was good tonight,” said the veteran driver. “Leonard (Lee) has it running fast. We were pretty close again tonight. We were fast all night.”

On the final restart, with two laps to go, Haudenschild again looked to the high side of the track as he looked for a way around McCarl. He got even with him coming off the second turn but could not quite make a pass. He then held off a last lap challenge from Lasoski for the third spot.

“I wanted to be up top on the restart,” he said. “The bottom went away at the end. I tried everything I could to catch those guys. It was a good run for the team. I’m glad to be driving this R19 car this year.”

Lasoski finished fourth in his own Todd Creason Pipeline Construction JEI. He started sixth and lost a couple of spots early in the race before working his way back into the Top-Five. Just past the halfway point of the 40-lap event he got around Jason Meyers to move into third. He would end up battling Haudenschild for most of the remainder of the contest.

Meyers finished fifth in the GLR Investments KPC to earn his series best 44th Top-Five finish of the season, as he continues to chase his first World of Outlaws championship.

Steve Kinser, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion turned in a masterful performance on Saturday night coming all the way from the 20th starting spot to finish sixth in the Q Oil Maxim, to earn the KSE Race Products Hard Charger Award.

Joey Saldana was seventh in the Budweiser/Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI, with Paul McMahan in eighth driving the Casey’s General Stores Maxim. Daryn Pittman worked his way from 18th to ninth aboard the Titan Garages Maxim, with Chad Kemenah rounding out the Top-10 in the Kantor Oil Company Maxim.

The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to action on Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12 at Hollywood Hills Speedway in New Mexico.

Kraig Kinser Claims Inaugural World of Outlaws Event at North Central Speedway

Brainerd, MN— October 3, 2008—Kraig Kinser used a little bit of every element that is important to winning a race on Friday night, in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series inaugural event at North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minnesota.

He used a strong start to gain a spot on the opening lap to move into third, and then was patient as the leaders hit lapped traffic early in the race. He also used some perseverance as he battled Lucas Wolfe for a number of laps for the second position. In addition to this, he had a little luck in his side as Joey Saldana had mechanical trouble while leading, which gave him the top spot. Lastly and probably the most important, his car continued to get faster as the race wore on, especially in lapped traffic, which helped him ultimately pick up his second A-Feature win of the season.

The $10,000 victory was the ninth of his career with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and his second this season aboard the Bass Pro Shops Maxim for Tony Stewart Racing.

“It feels good,” Kinser said. “We had a really good car all night. I am happy for this whole Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet team. We were a little off in the dash, but we found what we needed for the feature. We’re back on track and it feels really good.”

Kraig Kinser started fourth and got around his father, 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser on the first lap, both on the initial start and the complete restarted that was necessitated after an opening lap accident involving Chad Kemenah and Danny Lasoski.

After battling Wolfe for a number of laps, Kraig Kinser dove under him exiting the fourth turn on the 19th lap, making the pass for the second spot right before the pair crossed the start finish line, the same lap that Saldana’s night would come to an end while leading. The pass then became the deciding factor in the race.

“I know that Lucas (Wolfe) wants to get that win,” the younger Kinser said. “I caught him in traffic and got by and then Joey (Saldana) broke. Having clean track helped, but I think I was a little better than Lucas in traffic anyway. I wasn’t sure if I had beaten Lucas back to the line (before the caution) and had to make sure that I was leading,”

Kinser began the night by winning the third heat race to earn a spot in the Crane Cams Dash in his debut at the track. He finished fourth in the dash to earn a second row starting spot for the 35-lap contest.  He led the final 16 laps of the race en route to the win.

“It does equalize it a little bit (when everyone visits a track for the first time), but these guys are the best in the country for a reason,” explained the third generation driver. “They adapt really well and really quick. It wasn’t going to be a total advantage for anyone. If the car is rolling well you’re going to be quick.”

Wolfe led the first seven laps of the race, and was out front on the initial start and the complete restart. He wound up second in the Allebach Racing Maxim to earn his second consecutive runner-up finish as he chases his first World of Outlaws win. Wolfe has started on the front row in three consecutive events and now has eight Top-10 finishes this season, with two consecutive runner-up performances.

“We’ve been running good, and I think we have consistently been running good for about the last 10 races or so,” said Wolfe. “We are up where we need to be and are continuing to improve. This is our best result on a tight track of this nature. We are getting better at that, and those are all good things for the future.”

Early in the race, Wolfe jumped out to about a six car length lead over Saldana before the leaders entered lapped traffic on the sixth lap. They were nearly three-wide with a lapped car as they came off the fourth turn on the fifth lap. On the eighth lap, Saldana dove under Wolfe exiting turn four in heavy traffic to take the lead. Wolfe fought back and retook the lead heading into turns one and two, with Saldana reclaiming the top spot as the duo motored down the back straightaway.

“We are racing good guys up there,” said the first-year driver. “I was able to beat Joey (Saldana) off the start and got to lapped first, which isn’t always a good thing. He was able to get me, and we just weren’t quite good enough in lapped traffic. We just didn’t make the right move at the right time. Kraig (Kinser) was able to then get me on the bottom right after that. I’m happy to be racing with those guys and hopefully we can do that for the remainder of the season.”

The final caution of the night flew with seven laps remaining, giving Wolfe one more shot to make a run at Kinser. He looked low in turns one and two on the restart and nearly pulled even with the leader, but was not quite able to make a pass.

“I figured with seven laps to go we wouldn’t get back into traffic again,” the native of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania said. “I got a restart with about 16 to go and got around the bottom pretty good and it wasn’t as good on top. I thought if he got up there a little bit, that it may open the door, but he was able to momentum around me. I got up to him, but wasn’t able to get by him.”

Steve Kinser finished third in the Q Oil Maxim, to earn his 28th Top-Five finish of the season. He challenged his son a couple of times early in the race for the third position, before falling back a little bit while running fourth. He too gained a spot when Saldana fell out of the race.

“I didn’t quite have enough on that last restart to catch them,” he said. “I didn’t get the restart I wanted. I had a good seat to watch that race up there between those guys.”

Terry McCarl finished fourth aboard the Big Game Treestands Maxim to pick up his 26th Top-10 finish of the season. Kerry Madsen was fifth in the TK Concrete Maxim to earn his 36th Top-10 finishes of the season.

Paul McMahan started 11th after racing his way into the A-Feature by winning the B-Main, and wound up sixth in the Casey’s General Stores Maxim. Donny Schatz finished seventh aboard the Armor All J&J. Jason Meyers, who started the night by setting a new track record in time trials en route to his 13th quick time honor of the season was eighth on Friday night in the GLR Investments KPC.

Jac Haudenschild was ninth in the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim. Chad Kemenah battled his way to a 10th place showing in the Kantor Oil Company Maxim, after getting caught up in a first lap accident that sent him to the work area for a new front axle which ultimately put him at the back of the field for the complete restart.

Haudenschild Looking Forward to World of Outlaws Debut at North Central Speedway

Brainerd, MN— October 2, 2008—From coast-to-coast, Jac Haudenschild has visited more tracks than he can remember over the last 35 years. He has won in most every state he has raced in, 24 to be exact, as well as Australia and Canada, but one place missing from this list of victories is the state of Minnesota, where he has four consecutive Top-10 finishes, including two podium performances.

He will have a chance to pick up his first checkered flag in the “Lane of 10,000 Lakes” this weekend as the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series competes twice in the state, beginning on Friday, October 3 with their inaugural visit to North Central Speedway in Brainerd, followed by their annual stop at Princeton Speedway on Saturday night.

“I always enjoy going to tracks for the first time,” shared Haudenschild. “We are definitely looking forward to it and will be glad to get back on the track. We look to do well up there for our car owner and sponsors who are from up there.”

For the Carnahan Motorsports team, which is based in Minnesota the weekend will be a homecoming, as they are able to work out of their own shop for a few days and regroup for the final West Coast swing of the season over the next two weeks. Haudenschild is in his first season driving for the team, with veteran crew chief Leonard Lee turning the wrenches.

“Lon (Carnahan) is a great car owner and I am glad to be driving for him,” he said. “Leonard (Lee), Marie (Lapointe) and Randy (Nygaard) have been working very hard on the car this year. I know that each night I’ll have a good fast race car.”

Haudenschild has been one of the most consistent drives this year, especially over the second half of the World of Outlaws season aboard the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim. He has racked up four wins in the last five weeks, including his third victory in the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in California which earned him $50,000. Heading into action this week, the veteran driver is sixth in the series championship standings on the strength of 41 Top-10 finishes, with 18 of those being Top-Five performances.

“The R19 has been quick all season,” said the native of Wooster, Ohio. “Leonard Lee has had the car good all year long. We have been fast all year, and just weren’t able to get the job done. It’s all paying off now.”

Haudenschild recently won his 50th career A-Feature events with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series in thrilling fashion at Lebanon Valley Speedway in New York, a feat accomplished by just eight other drivers in the 30 year existence of the series. He is currently ninth on the series all-time list.

“It was great to win the 50th, he noted. “We were hoping to pick that one up this season and we did. It’s pretty special to be up there. That’s a place (Lebanon Valley Speedway) where I have had some bad luck over the years and even got hurt there, so to win there was good.”

Haudenschild won his first World of Outlaws event on July 21, 1985 at Kokomo Speedway in Indiana. He held off Ron Shuman and Jimmy Sills for that win. He has won races in 17 different seasons with the series, including the last four consecutive. He competed with the series for the first time during their 1978 inaugural season when they visited the famed Eldora Speedway in his home state.

“I still do remember the first one,” recalled the veteran driver. “It came at Kokomo and Jim McQueen was working on my car. That was back when they were still running steel block engines. I had run a lot of races with the series before I won that one.”

While he has been a fixture on the World of Outlaws circuit for a number of seasons over the years, back in the early days of the series he ran a more limited scheduled as was the case for many drivers. He would race anywhere, anytime, in a sprint car, whether it had a wing on it or not and he continually won races in whatever type of machine he was driving. In his career, he has finished in the Top-10 in the World of Outlaws championship standings 13 times, including a career-best second-place finish in 1995. He is on pace to finish in the Top-Five this season.

“For years, I never ran the full deal,” he explained. “It was hard to find a car owner back then that was able to run 80 or 90 races a year. You just ran as many races as you could. You just had to take whatever rides you could find. There were some guys that would run 40 or 50 races a year, but finding one to run the whole season was tough.”

Entering this week’s inaugural event at North Central Speedway, Haudenschild has eight Top-10 finishes in the last nine World of Outlaws events, including three wins. He has won the Crane Cams Dash five times to earn pole positions this year, and also has been quickest in time trials twice. He has finished eighth or better in all three inaugural events for the World of Outlaws, with two of those being Top-Five performances. The race at North Central Speedway will be the series final inaugural event of the season.

On Friday, October 3 at North Central Speedway, general admission tickets for adults will be $30, with general admission tickets for children $15. All reserved tickets will be $35. For tickets call (218)-829-2231.

Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Preview: Princeton Speedway

Princeton, MN — October 1, 2008—Just two events remain on ¼-mile tracks this season for the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, with the first of those coming this Saturday, October 4 at Princeton Speedway in Minnesota as the series invades the always racy high-banked bullring for the PolyDome Princeton National.

The ¼-mile has been hosting the series since 2004 and in the four A-Feature events contested at the track four drivers have picked up victories. The event will mark the final stop of the season for the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series in the upper Midwest.

Donny Schatz was victorious for the first time in his career at Princeton Speedway last season. In eight career starts at the high-banked ¼-mile he has eight Top-10 finishes. Jac Haudenschild who has been one of the most consistent drivers over the second-half of the season has four career Top-10 finishes at Princeton Speedway, including two runner-up performances. He won on a ¼-mile earlier at Silver Dollar Speedway during the finale of the $50,000 Gold Cup Race of Champions at the beginning of September. He recently picked up his 50th career A-Feature win with the World of Outlaws. He has won four times this season and is just outside of the Top-Five in points.

Kerry Madsen, the reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, finished third in his debut at Princeton Speedway last season. The native of St. Mary’s, NSW, Australia is currently seventh in points on the strength of 35 Top-10 finishes as he closes in on his first win of the season.

Chad Kemenah, who wore the rookie crown in 2006, finished 10th at Princeton Speedway in 2006. The four-time All Star Circuit of Champions title winner has 33 Top-10 finishes this season as he also closes in on his first win of the season.

Terry McCarl, who recently won his first race of the season, has three Top-10 finishes in just a handful of starts at Princeton Speedway in his career. The six-time Knoxville Raceway and Huset’s Speedway track champion is solidly in the ninth spot in the series standings on the strength of 25 Top-10 finishes.

Sam Hafertepe Jr. made his first visit to Princeton Speedway last season. He recently matched his season best finish with a third-place run at Lebanon Valley Speedway in New York. The sophomore driver from Sunnyvale, Texas has 16 Top-10 finishes this season and is just outside of the Top-10 in the series standings.

Kraig Kinser, the 2004 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, has four career Top-10 finishes at Princeton Speedway, including Top-Five performances in his first two starts at the track in 2004. He won earlier this season at Grays Harbor Raceway in Washington, as he continues his first season driving for Tony Stewart Racing.

Chad Hillier, who is also in his second full season with the World of Outlaws, finished a very solid 11th in his second visit to Princeton Speedway this season. The native of Burlington, Washington has five Top-10 finishes this season as he closes in on the Top-15 in points.

Lucas Wolfe, who is in his first full season on the road with the World of Outlaws, will make his debut at Princeton Speedway on Saturday, October 4. He recently picked up a season-best third-place finish at Orange County Fair Speedway in New York.

Paul McMahan has four Top-10 finishes at Princeton Speedway during his career. The California native, who now calls Nashville home, has picked up 14 Top-10 finishes this season as he chases his first win of the year.

Brooke Tatnell, who is filling in for the injured Craig Dollansky, won a preliminary feature at Princeton Speedway in 2005. He has six Top-10 finishes in seven starts with the series at the track.

2007 Race Recap:  Donny Schatz picked up his first career win at Princeton Speedway, inheriting the lead when Chad Blonde got into the wall while leading.

Schatz led the final 13 laps of the event despite not having any brakes on the high-banked quarter-mile.

The only hiccup on the night for Schatz was that he lost his brakes in the A-Feature. With the first 21 laps of the event running caution free, he found himself in heavy lapped traffic early in the race as he chased Chad Blonde who was setting a blistering pace on the cushion of the track.

The race began with Justin Henderson jumping to the lead from the outside front row starting position. He would pace the first five laps before the pole sitter Chad Blonde would dive under him exiting the fourth turn on the sixth lap in heavy lapped traffic.

Blonde would quickly open a comfortable lead as Henderson was bottled up in lapped traffic. As he began to pull away, Schatz closed on Henderson to battle for the second spot. After working on him for several laps, Schatz was able to get around Henderson on the 19th lap and set his sights on Blonde.

A number of caution and red flags followed. Prior to a caution on the lap 22 lap, Schatz charged to the lead off the second turn, as Blonde went very low on the track and got loose. A full lap was not completed and thus Blonde lined up in the lead on the restart.

He endured four restarts on that same lap before a lap 25 caution led to a fuel stop. Blonde again used a strong restart to quickly jump to a sizeable lead, but just three laps later he would encounter heavy lapped traffic. While exiting the fourth turn on lap 28, he jumped the cushion and tagged the wall very hard on the front straightaway nearly getting upside down and handing the lead to Schatz. A broken front end would end Blonde’s night.

With 12 laps to go, Schatz led on the restart, with Joey Saldana chasing him. A couple more yellow flags put Saldana right on Schatz’s bumper. With five laps to go, Schatz hit traffic and masterfully weaved his way through it to win by nearly a second.

Saldana wound up second, with Kerry Madsen third, Tim Shaffer fourth and Justin Henderson fourth.
