USAC’s Midwest

pair of rainouts last Saturday.
Races at Rocky
Mountain Raceways in Salt
Lake City, Utah and Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway were
cancelled due to weather. The Utah
Auto Trader Ford Focus Series resumes May 16 in the Utah
capital.
Eric Gunderson of San
Diego, Calif. is the current point leader in the California
Pavement standings, nine points ahead of Cody Gerhardt going into
Saturday’s race at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway where the USAC
Western Midgets share billing.
Joe Liguori of Tampa, Fla. Leads the USAC
Midwest Ford Focus standings going into this Friday night’s
“tripleheader” at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. He’s eight

Garrett Hansen of Manhattan
Beach, Calif. continues to enjoy a healthy point lead over
two-time series runner-up Scott Pierovich (2007-2008), but that lead
could diminish Saturday if Pierovich has a good night.
Rain forced cancellation of last Saturday’s
scheduled USAC “tripleheader” at the Stockton (Calif.) 99

Midgets return there October 10.
It could be “Swanson Night” if this year’s

the quarter-mile paved oval which has a rich USAC
racing tradition. A.J.
Foyt won the track’s first USAC race in 1957. Since then the
track has hosted 10 nights of racing which included at least three
feature events. The all-time record of six USAC features in one night
occurred at Anderson last year, with three features each for the
Regional Midgets, Indiana
Focus and Kenyon Midgets
Highlighting Friday’s events will be the return
of former USAC National
Ford Focus Champion Robbie Ray of Davenport, Iowa. who won the

SPRINT CARS HEAD FOR
“UNPREDICTABLE” BLOOMINGTON FRIDAY;
EAST 10TH “NIEBEL CLASSIC” WINNER IN 10 YEARS!
The USAC National Sprint Car Series heads for
Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway Friday night and if past history plays a
part it’s anybody’s guess who might win.
Twenty-seven USAC races at the quarter-mile dirt
oval have produced 23 different winners since Bob Tattersall’s 1970
Midget victory. Tony Elliott (3), Russ
Gamester and Kevin Briscoe are the only multiple race winners
at the track under USAC sanction.
Current National Sprint Car point leader Dave
Darland, who finished 15th Saturday night at Anderson (Ind.)
Speedway, won at Bloomington in 2007, while Jerry Coons Jr., who was
fifth at Anderson, won last year’s “Indiana Sprint Week” feature
at Bloomington.
Bobby
East of Brownsburg, Ind. became the 10th different winner in 10
“Glen Niebel Classics,” leading the final 89 laps to win Saturday
night’s 100-lap Anderson feature. Driving the Klatt Enterprises Club
Sport/Ford Racing Beast Ford, East started sixth as the fastest
qualifier but caught early leader Bobby
Santos III on lap 12 and lapped everybody but second-place

time of under 20 minutes! Santos finished third, ahead of Levi
Jones and Coons Jr.

DRIVERS
TAKE NOTE: AHEAD OF THE GAME SEMINAR SERIES
MAY 20 IN INDIANAPOLIS, JULY 22 IN JOLIET
Drivers pursuing a career in motorsports should
take note: U/S Sports Advisors is offering a unique seminar, the Ahead
of the Game Seminar Series – Motorsports Edition – which could
change your life and your status in the motorsports industry.
The seminars will take place in Indianapolis, Ind.,
and Joliet, Ill. and will present key concepts for drivers to
immediately apply to their careers.
Success in today’s motorsports field demands not
only talent behind the wheel but a keen sense of communications and
diplomacy. What happens away from the race
track is often as important as what happens on it. Timing is a
key and personal relationships play a huge part in determining a
driver’s success or failure.
Located in Carmel, Ind., U/S/ Sports Advisors
conducts the seminars for drivers 16 years of age and up and parents
of talented young drivers preparing for a racing career.
The Indianapolis seminar is scheduled Wednesday,
May 20, from 10 am to 2 pm in Parlor A of the Brickyard Crossing at
the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway. It’s Community Day at IMS and the garages
will be open to people of all ages. General admission for Community
Day ($7) is not included, but not required for the Brickyard Crossing.
The Joliet seminar is Wednesday, July 22 from 2 to
6 pm at the Autobahn Country Club, Members Club. This is move-in day
at nearby Chicagoland
Speedway for the Star
Mazda and Formula Atlantic Series.
Led by U/S Sports Advisors President Ken Ungar, the
seminars include materials developed over many years through
collaboration with athletes, teams, Agents, sponsors, the media and
others. Ungar, who in 2007 published Ahead of the Game: What Every
Athlete Needs to Know About Sports Business, has business expertise
highlighted on ABC World News Tonight, Good
Morning America, ESPN News, Fox Business News, CNBC, Sports
Illustrated and the Sports
Business Journal.
Topics will include “How to define and
communicate your personal
brand,” promoting your career and finding your sponsors and
question and answer sessions will allow interaction with the
instructor.
To register, please visit www.AheadoftheGameSeminar.com.
The cost is less than a set of tires, $495 per driver. Drivers under
the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at no
additional charge. Included are a three-hour seminar, one hour of Q
& A, a copy of the Ahead of the Game book by Ungar and complete
electronic files of a written proposal, graphics, and template for a
customized door-opening proposal.
If you are planning a driving career in motorsports,
don’t miss this unique opportunity! For more information, contact
U/S Sports Advisors at 317-569-9299
or by fax at 317-569-0393.
VENTURA RESCHEDULES $5,000-TO-WIN
MIDGET RACE TO NOV. 21
A $5,000-to-win USAC Western Midget race, part of a
unique “tripleheader,” is scheduled November 21 at the Ventura
(Calif.) Raceway. The event has been moved from its
originally-scheduled November 14 date by race organizer Jim Naylor and
USAC to accommodate the USAC/CRA “Pacific Coast Nationals” Sprint
car event at Tulare, Calif., which was also announced today.
Featuring the USAC Western Midget, California Ford
Focus Dirt and Junior Focus series, the “tripleheader”
continues a rich tradition of USAC racing at the storied southern
California fairgrounds oval. In addition, winners of the Ford Focus
and Junior Focus races will be crowned USAC’s National Champions in
those respective series.
“We are delighted to be able to host this
event,” said Naylor. We want this to become an annual target for
California race fans and look forward to showcasing some of
America’s finest racing talent on our action-packed dirt oval.”
Ventura Raceway has been USAC’s most active venue
since its 1986 debut, a Midget race won by all-time USAC Western
Midget victory leader Sleepy
Tripp. In the past 24 years the track has hosted 127 TQ Midget
races, 120 Midget races, 37 Ford Focus races, 16 Junior Focus races
and 14 Sprint
car races for a grand total of 314 USAC events!
The November 21 event highlights a busy month of
USAC racing in the Golden State and should provide spectacular racing
as drivers and teams vie for USAC season-ending championships.
“PACIFIC COAST NATIONALS” AT TULARE
NOVEMBER 14-15
The USAC National and Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint Car
Series will compete for over $70,000 in prize money in the November
14-15 “Pacific Coast Nationals” at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare,
Calif. The two-day program at the 1/3-mile dirt oval at the Tulare
Fairgrounds marks only the second time the USAC Sprint cars have
competed there and the fifth appearance of USAC at Tulare.
The winner of Sunday’s “twilight” feature
will earn a paycheck of $12,500, while minimum feature-start money is
$700. Saturday night’s standard USAC/CRA purse offers $4,000-to-win.
Cory
Kruseman won the 2007 USAC/CRA race at Tulare and is excited
about the Pacific Coast
Nationals. “It’s about damn time,” he says, referring to
the revival of the Pacific Coast Nationals. “I can’t think of a
better place to do this. It’s one of my favorite tracks. It’s a
nice facility, where the promoter cares about the people and he always
comes around to thank you for being there. The surface stays good and
you can drive the track in the old west style – “drive it in hard
and back it in.”
The Pacific Coast Nationals were conceived by the
late J.C. Agajanian and debuted in 1962 at Ascot
Park in Gardena, Calif. Following Ascot’s closing in 1990,
the event moved to Kings Speedway in Hanford, but was discontinued
after 1995. Past winners of the event, which has experienced format
and headlining division changes, include Jim Wood (1962), Jim Cox

Race organizer Steve Faria is excited about the
“Pacific Coast Nationals” finding a home at his track. “We are
honored to host the event,” he said. “Non-wing racing has a bright
future here and with Kevin Miller’s leadership and perspectives I
think USAC is headed in the right direction. This event will be good
for California and we were really disappointed following last year’s
USAC rainout.” Thunderbowl Raceway derived its name from a track
which operated in the 1940s on the south side of Tulare but was
disbanded. Steve and his staff reconfigured the track in 1993, then
expanded it in the late-1990s, but auto racing on the grounds actually
dates back to right after the second
World War.
“USAC’s goal is to present signature
motorsports events for our participants and fans and I believe this
will be a keystone event on our 2009 calendar,” says USAC
President/CEO Kevin Miller. “We look forward to working with Tulare
in creating a “destination” for race fans in mid-November. The
Pacific Coast Nationals has a rich tradition and we look to build upon
that to give western race fans an extremely exciting entertainment
product. We expect it to play a pivotal role in the battle for 2009
USAC championships.”
The first USAC appearance at Tulare in 1988 saw P.J.
Jones victorious in a Midget race. The following year, Robby Flock and
Sleepy
Tripp won USAC Midget races there and Wiley Miller won a USAC
TQ Midget feature.
The scheduling of the Tulare program for Saturday
and Sunday allows ample time for travel for USAC teams participating
in Thursday’s (Nov. 12) “Copper World Classic” Silver Crown and
Midget races at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway.
VUKOVICH CLASSIC
SATURDAY AT MADERA
Madera (Calif.) Speedway is the site of this
Saturday’s 32nd Annual “Vukovich Classic,” honoring the famed
Fresno, Calif. racing family which had such a dynamic impact on the
sport of auto racing. The event is presented by Inside Lines Apparel
& Graphics.
Featuring the USAC Western Midgets and USAC
California Pavement Ford Focus Midgets, the race continues a tradition
of USAC racing on the 1/3-mile paved oval which spans the past 33
years!
The late Billy
Vukovich III scored eight USAC victories in the supermodifieds
at Madera and his victory total there is only surpassed by Davey
Hamilton and Tony Hunt, who have won nine times each.
Billy’s grandfather Bill won the 1953 and 1954
Indianapolis 500s and was leading in 1955 prior to his fatal accident.
Billy’s father Bill continued the family legacy with an Indianapolis
500 career of his own, which included a second-place finish
behind Gordon Johncock
in 1973. Billy himself made it to Indy as well, claiming “Rookie
of the Year” honors in 1988, an honor bestowed on his father
Bill twenty years earlier. Billy’s uncle Eli was also a race driver.
In 1987 Billy III scored seven consecutive wins in
the USAC Supermodified
Series, which tied A.J.
Foyt’s all-time USAC National consecutive victory record of
seven in the Championship Cars in 1964. Four of Billy’s six Madera
wins that year came during that seven-in-a-row stretch.
Saturday’s event highlights the track’s
“Super Saturday” slate as drivers battle for valuable points
toward USAC’s 2009 driving championships.
