WORLD FIGURE 8® STOCK
CHAMPION TO BAG $5,000 PRIZE
The Home of the World
Figure 8® has some exciting news for all Stock class Figure 8
competitors from around the country. For the second straight year,
the Kenny’s
Auto Sales Award for top finishing Stock in the 34th Annual
World Figure 8®
Championship, running September 9-11 at the
Indianapolis Speedrome®, will receive an amazing $5000! This
will again be one of the highest amounts EVER paid to a Stock class
Figure 8 driver in a single event in the United States! “This award
last year brought out some very talented racers”, stated 2003
Speedrome Hall of Fame
inductee and award sponsor Kenny Sizemore. “Matt Clark did a
great job in soldiering home to the $5,000 prize. I believe that
2010 will be an even stronger field of Stock cars in the Greatest
Figure 8 Race on the Planet®”.
Last year’s inaugural 5k battle went down to the final hour with a
Speedrome Stockcar vs. a Sportsdrome Xtreme Figure 8 car match-up
while many other types of qualified rides took the challenge. For
2010, we are adding to the eligible list the V-6 ARCA Figure 8 cars
from the Flat Rock and
Toledo Speedway’s. These Michigan racing legends have been an
intrical part of the World Figure 8® Championship since its
inception in 1977; names like Chuck Hall, Bob Belz, Bob Studt, Dave
Miller, Gary Earley, Billy Simmons, John Briggs, Frank Loving Jr.,
Jack Dandy, Ken Ahlgren, Ray Gaddis, and many others were in the mix
for the prestigious win these early days. For more information, to
register, or to view the event’s agenda, you can log on to
www.speedrome.com
or call the Speedrome hotline at
(317) 353-8206.
The $5000 award in the Three Hour
Endurance Race® main event will replace the amount scheduled
to be paid for the overall finishing spot earned by that top
finishing Stock driver. This is of course unless they win the World
title in which that $20,000 check will land in their bank account.
In the past, the award was a $1000 bonus to be added on to the
feature prize money. This latest edition of the Kenny’s Auto Sales
Award essentially guarantees that top finishing Stock driver $5000
in total prize money.
The World Figure 8® Championship is the only race on the planet that
a driver can win without being on the track at the start or even
seeing the
checkered flag. Drivers are placed in the results by total
laps completed. The 32-car starting grid is assembled with the 24
drivers who locked-in through qualifying races on Friday September
10th. The remaining 8 spots are tacked-on through
unlimited time trials
on Saturday afternoon. Every other car will be lined-up as
alternates by their qualifying time. This line of alternates will be
added individually to the race as cars drop out of the event. In the
past, drivers have entered as an alternate and drove their way as
high as third place at the finish. All cars that leave the surface
can return making this the only race that can grow in size as the
laps increase.
The Stock type cars will have three opportunities to earn a spot in
the prestigious starting field including a Stock only 25-lap
qualifying race Friday night in which the top four finishers will
lock-in to the main event. Being in the starting 32 could give a
driver a “leg up” on the other challengers for this award. These
starters will also be part of the pageantry during pre-race
ceremonies before the 180-minute test of man and machine begins.
They will be recognized as part of the best collection Figure 8
gladiators around in front of the Speedrome standing room only
crowd.
The 34th Annual World Figure 8® Championship at the Indianapolis
Speedrome® is September 9th to 11th, 2010. In 1977 they said this
race couldn’t be run, a three hour-long Figure 8 contest. No car
will last and no driver will last is what everyone said. Now in its
thirty-fourth year, the World Figure 8® Championship is a racing
classic. Ticket information is available by calling the Speedrome
hotline at (317) 353-8206 or by logging on to
www.speedrome.com.
INDIANAPOLIS
SPEEDROME, SPEED, NEWAVE TV TO LAUNCH WORLD FIGURE 8® FALL TOUR
The World Figure 8® Tour
is proud to announce that a new post season tradition is born. The
Fall Figure 8 Challenge is a 3-race series showcasing the best in
crossover competition from the cars and stars of the World Figure 8®
Championship. 2
tracks, 1 night of National television coverage, and a special
champion’s bonus is just the tip of the iceberg of the latest WF8T
venture. This decree comes on the heels of the very successful 2010
WF8T campaign won by Jack Dossey Jr. The dates for these Fall Figure
8 classics are September 18 at the
Indianapolis Speedrome, September 25 at the
Sportsdrome Speedway, and October 9 back at the Speedrome.
The adventure gets underway September 18 just one week after the
Greatest Figure 8 Race on the Planet®, the 34th Annual World Figure
8® Championship. The television cameras will be rolling for Twin
50-lap Figure 8 main events. Our friends at NeWave Productions will
have the Speedrome wallpapered with equipment to capture the intense
action. It will be shown on the familiar program
Lucas Oil on
the Edge on Speed
channel. This is a great opportunity for drivers and teams to
showcase their skills for a huge viewing audience. And for fans to
let the television watches how much you love
Figure 8 racing.
The series continues its institution of having a common and
affordable tire program. While new tires are always available at the
Speedrome and on race day at the events, teams can use their
experienced rubber from the previous World Figure 8® Tour shows as
well as the 34th Annual World Figure 8® Championship to be held
September 9th to 11th. This situation helps new drivers and teams
with an opportunity to compete and experience the thrill of the
sport of Figure 8 racing. These three scheduled WF8T events have
quite a bit of history behind each.
The Saturday night after the World Championship has been a regular
date on the Speedrome calendar since 1989. Traditionally known as
the Final Fling Figure 8, it has given racers an outlet to keep the
momentum going or to get it back in the right direction after the
Three Hour
Endurance Race®. Jack Dossey Jr has been very solid in this
event taking home the victory in 6 of the 18 ever held. The next
highest victory total is two belonging to Bruce Tunny who won the
initial pair held and
Doug Greig who was twice victorious in recent years. Donnie
Garrigus III was last year’s winner in a thrilling finish. This will
be the first-time that the night has had championship points on the
line.
The World Figure 8® Tour then heads south to the Sportsdrome
Speedway. It is the initial WF8T event to be ever held at the
historic Figure 8 facility. The track has played host to many
star-studded gatherings of these Late Model type machines over the
years and produced many of Figure 8’s greatest stars. At this event
in 2009, it was a family sweep of the top two spots. Ben Tunny,
fresh off his World title victory, led his brother Jesse across the
finish line. The September 25 race will be a part of a spectacular
double main event. The track’s signature Figure 8 division will
compete in the 44th edition of the Midwestern Figure 8 Championship.
Look for Sportsdrome greats like Leonard Basham, Chris Harmon, Mark
Harmon, and many more to make their first WF8T appearances in the
Fall Figure 8 Challenge.
October 9 is the final night in this World Figure 8® Tour Fall
Challenge. Another century-length feature will stand in front of the
talented driver roster. The race is the 9th Annual North/South 100.
It has always been a gathering of racers from several states
converging at the
Indianapolis fifth-mile. Michigan Invaders Jeremy Miller and
Jeremy Vanderhoof have had some strong results in this contest with
Miller finishing a state best third in 2003. Last year saw Ben Tunny
continue his blazing streak of victories with a dominating
performance. It will be a fun and interesting series for drivers and
fans alike. Stay tuned for more news in the upcoming weeks involving
the World Figure 8® Tour.
REIGNING TRACK
CHAMPIONS TOP SPEEDROME FIGURE 8 DOUBLEHEADER
The fans got twice the
crossover action on
Saturday night at the World’s Home of the Figure 8®. After a
full program of oval competition, the Dad’s Truck & Auto Late Models
and Scooter’s Auto Sales Stocks presented by Peters Auto Service
each delighted those in attendance with a Figure 8 main event. Both
had thrilling battles for the lead with some intense intersection
interaction as well as crashes and smashes. Also in competition this
evening were the
1-800-Radiator & AC Roadrunners and Thirsty Turtle Tavern
Hornets. The Chase for the Cup clashes were one’s to witness.
The Dad’s Truck & Auto Late Models blazed into this evening with
scant few races left in the $10,000-to-win Chase for the Cup
championship. In qualifications, it was defending division king Mark
Tunny timing in only the third sub-thirteen second lap of the year
at 12.985 for quick time. Second-generation racer Casey White won
the trophy dash while Bruce Tunny, Austin Tunny, and Earl Bryant
captured heat races. The 25-lap oval feature had 1988 World Figure
8® Champion Leonard Basham take the early lead after making the
two-hour journey north to
Indianapolis. Mark Tunny marched from his 16th place starting
spot using the champion’s outside groove to make the winning pass
for his third oval win of the year. Basham was the runner-up with
point leader Jack Dossey Jr third.
The Late Models returned for their 50-lap Figure 8 main event.
Basham would shape the early advantage mix as well as would the
veteran
Steve Frost. Oval victor Mark Tunny and his cousin Ben were
next to elevate themselves into the top two. White joined in on the
fun soon after along with Dossey. The challenge trio packed in
behind Mark as his pace was not as swift as normal because of damage
suffered from a crossover crash in the evening’s warm-up session.
But, Tunny was up to the challenge as he held off the talented pack
for his third Figure 8 triumph of the season and the night’s feature
sweep. White would use traffic to grab a runner-up result for the
second straight week with Ben Tunny settling for third.
The Scooter’s Auto Sales Stocks presented by Peters Auto Service
rolled into this rare feature doubleheader program just one week
after a classic Kenny’s Auto Sales 100.
Time trials
started off the festivities with Joshua Carroll putting up a very
impressive best lap of 13.700 seconds. Three-time champion Jimmy
Kirby, rising star
Eddie Rogers, and veteran Bob Johnson were best in the
preliminary heat action. The 25-lap oval feature saw division icon
Jack Smith go wire-to-wire for his first main event victory since
2005. Crossover ace
Mike Burgess was second with a resurgent
Jimmy Anderson
third.
The Stocks retuned for another 25-lap clash this time on the
dangerous Figure 8. The contest was passionate as it had three red
flag crack-ups on a Groundhog Day opening circuit. First was a spin
by Anderson
that caught the edge of the Kirby car. The second saw
Brian Canter’s machine on fire. The final pause came for a
huge pile-up in turn one which ended the night of Kenny’s 100 champ
Larry Hahn. The race resumed with Johnson as the initial leader
before Donnie Sloan went up top. 2010 leading rookie Nigel Peters
was next to pace, but was clipped at the intersection by
Chris Shrum ripping off a bumper to bring out the red. The
restart saw Chad Sizemore take the primary position, but he lost a
wheel a lap later for another stoppage. Kirby snatched the lead on
the restart after Peters exercised his option to switch sides for
the green flag
battle. Jimmy would pace the final circuits to claim his 9th career
Stock Figure 8 win. Mark Eads Jr took second late. He finished on
the podium in all 2010 crossover races. Peters was third.
The 1-800-Radiator & AC Roadrunners had a hearty brigade of
competitors ready for tonight’s pursuit for victory. Heat one saw
Justin Dibbern win after an impressive run in his Stock debut last
weekend.
Kevin Smith was second. The final preliminary heat had Dave
Lester take the victory in his first 2010 attempt over Aaron Smay.
The feature’s early stages saw bad breaks end the evening for Chase
for the Cup title contenders Rex Cox II, Henry McDougalle Jr, and
Dibbern. Brian Canter would occupy the top spot nearly all the way
to take his first win of the season.
Championship rivals (and
Brothers)
Kenny and Kevin Smith would complete the results podium to increase
their standings lead.
The Thirsty Turtle Tavern Hornets started off the agenda with a
quad-pack of heat race contests. The first had third-generation
racer Dameron Taylor taking the win over Rob Mink Sr. The next
preliminary saw Ted Teney topping the field led by Robert Eversole.
The third heat had point leader Larry Hatfield take triumph over Don
VanValkenburg III. The final tester saw Legend point leader John
Greer Jr win over Cassidy Worden. Greer would finally have things go
his way in the four-cylinder affair, leading the entire 20-lap
distance for his first win of the year. Eversole was second to cut
the point lead to just three over fellow podium finisher Hatfield.

32ND ANNUAL PEPSI
100-LAP FIGURE 8 SATURDAY AT SPEEDROME
The Home of the World
Figure 8® has one of its longest standing events this Saturday night
August 28th. The Speedrome plays host to the 32nd Annual
Pepsi 100 for
the Dad’s Truck & Auto Late Models. The century length crossover
clash headlines a great card of racing action. The Scooter’s
Auto Sales
Stocks presented by Peters Auto Service,
1-800-Radiator & AC Roadrunners, and Thirsty Turtle Tavern
Hornets all search for championship points on the famous fifth-mile
oval. Racing begins at 7pm. The competition weekend gets underway
Friday night with the Vogel Dairy Junior Faskarts, Indy Faskarts,
INEX zMax Legends, INEX Bandoleros, Thirsty Turtle Tavern Hornets,
and Hornet Figure 8’s.
Just three nights remain in the quest for the Dad’s Truck & Auto
Late Model Chase for the Cup Championship and its $10,000 first
prize. Jack Dossey Jr continues to lead the standings in search of a
record-extending seventh title, but it was Mark Tunny who sent a
message to the field last weekend. The defending Late Model titlist
swept both features including an impressive oval performance. He cut
the gap to Jack down from 90 markers to 35 heading into this
long-distance test. The Pepsi 100 is an event that Dossey has
excelled in. His resume includes a record 6 victories in the race
formerly known as the season championship.
World Figure 8® Champions Bruce and Ben Tunny currently lead the
battle for third place with both drivers being past winners of this
upcoming contest. Along with fifth place racer Corey Turner, they
look to climb back under the 100 point bubble that most say is
crucial going into the One Hour Figure 8 finale on September 5th.
Rounding out the existing top ten are Speedy Teepe, Jesse Tunny,
Casey White, Austin Tunny, and
Steve Frost. Also watch for several new faces to join the
landscape during this final push towards some of the biggest Figure
8 events in the country. Here are the former winners of the Pepsi
100 Figure 8.

Speedrome Live radio
presented by XL950am Thursday August 26th to find out more. This
program’s guest lineup already includes 2007 World Figure 8®
Champion
Doug Greig as well as former Stock champion and team owner
Chris Eads, but
wait there is more. A mystery guest will be calling in to the show

This mystery guest will be making an announcement for this year’s
World Figure 8®
Championship to be held September 9 thru 11, 2010 at the
Speedrome. This drivers name will grab everyone around the Figure 8
planet’s attention. He is an icon of the sport and here is just a
taste of his statistics. Over 100 feature wins and 8 track
championships grace his resume. This World Figure 8 entry is a
shocker. “ I want to be a part of the 34th Annual World Figure 8 and
race at the
Indianapolis Speedrome.” The entries have been pouring in so
far with many Figure 8 hotbeds represented. States already in play
are California, Florida, Michigan, Kentucky, and of course Indiana.
You will have to tune in to find out this latest addition.
After this Speedrome Live radio episode, only September 9th remains
on the airwave calendar for 2010. That final date will be a marathon
of Speedrome coverage on XL950am. Their afternoon drive program
called The Zone will broadcast live 3pm to 6pm from the track
leading into the familiar weekly show hosted by Kevin O’Neal. Zone
host Derek Schultz will have plenty of World Figure 8® related
guests and have the phone lines open for your calls. This is the
first-ever appearance for the popular sports talk show at the
Speedrome. It is an exciting time at the World’s Home of the Figure
8®.

SHELBY SHAW TO SING
NATIONAL ANTHEM AT 2010 WORLD FIGURE 8®
The Home of the World
Figure 8® is very proud to announce that Shelby Shaw will sing the
National Anthem
at the 34th Annual World Figure 8®
Championship on
September 11th. Her beautiful voice will add the perfect
touch to an already blockbuster event. Shelby electrified the
Speedrome crowd with her singing of the National Anthem and
God Bless America on May 29th of this year. She will reprise
these two songs on our biggest racing weekend of the year.
Shelby Shaw is a 10th grade student at
North Harrison High School in Ramsey, Indiana. The talented
songstress has been involved in music her entire life. The young
lady has performed at many social and church functions as well as
several weddings. She has graced the stage at “Fourth Street Live”
in Louisville, Kentucky and competed in various talent shows
including the
Indiana State Fair. Shaw is a regular in all of her school
plays and musicals as well as singing the National Anthem at many
school events. We are happy to have her again perform for us before
the world recognizes her incredible voice.
The World Figure 8® Championship is a racing classic. It is the only
race on the planet that a driver can win without being on the track
at the start or even seeing the
checkered flag. Drivers are placed in the final results by
total laps completed. The 32-car starting grid is assembled with the
24 drivers who locked-in through qualifying races on Friday
September 10th. The remaining 8 spots are tacked-on through
unlimited time trials
on Saturday afternoon. Every other car will be lined-up as
alternates by their qualifying time. This line of alternates will be
added individually to the race as cars drop out of the event. In the
past, drivers have entered as an alternate and drove their way to a
third place finish. Those cars that leave the surface can also
return making this the only race that can grow in size as the laps
increase. All of this while having to survive the dangerous
crossover 900-plus times during the three-hour time period. It will
take your breath away!
